About this ebook

Leadership in the church is both a basic requirement and a significant problem. For every congregation that has benefitted from good leadership, there is at least one more that has suffered from bad leadership. This Bible Study has been prepared to help church leaders focus on their call to leadership and activity as leaders in the church. Through the use of Scripture, prayer and guided meditation, the readers are encouraged to think about themselves and their relationship to God and those they have been called to lead. It is not meant to be a textbook on leadership styles and characteristics but rather seeks to provide a leader with the opportunity to pray and reflect on their call and how to serve God effectively as leaders.

The Bible study is meant to be used daily for eight weeks. Each day, the readers will use Scripture, a meditation, questions and prayers to understand more about themselves and what it means for them to be a Christian leader.

HELP, I'M A LEADER: A BIBLE STUDY FOR CHURCH LEADERS

    REV. DR. RANDOLPH LEGASSIE

The study runs for eight weeks, and has a daily session. The suggested approach is for the reader to set aside some time each day to use the study--about 1/2 hour a day should be enough. Read the Scripture passage and the meditation. Many of the meditations will ask that you think about and write down specific ideas. Please do this--often the act of writing helps focus your thinking process.

It doesn't matter what day of the week you start on, nor does it really matter if you miss a day now and then. The sessions are meant to be read in sequence, with time to think between them. So, if you miss a day or two, pick up where you left off--don't feel you need to do more than one session a day to make up for lost time. The idea behind the study is not to get it done, but to use it as an aid to looking at and strengthening your leadership abilities.

I recommend a modern language translation of the Bible for this study. We live in an age where we have a wealth of Biblical translations and every individual can find a version that allows the Bible to speak clearly to their lives. As well, I would recommend that if you are using an electronic platform to read this study and it does not allow you to write notes in the text, you consider using a notebook or some kind to record your comments as you do the study--your reflections and comments are an important part of the process.

Notice also that as well as the reading for the meditation, there is also a reading from Luke or Acts beginning on WEEK ONE, Day 7. This is included because many Christians, even Christian leaders, have no regular pattern of reading Scripture. If you don't read Scripture on a daily basis, please read the passages from Luke-Acts. If you do have a regular daily reading pattern, the readings from Luke-Acts are optional. Luke-Acts is recommended in this study because the books were written by the same author and cover both the story of Jesus and the story of the establishment of the church. When you finish this Bible Study, you will be encouraged to develop your own Bible reading plan is you don't already have one.

    LEADERSHIP BIBLE STUDY

WEEK ONE: REVIEW OF THE CHRISTIAN BASICS

Day 1: The grace of God

    READ: Romans 5.6-11

The story of the Bible is encapsulated in this brief passage from Romans. We are sinners. In the Bible, the word sin is used to describe two things:

    1. The things we do that are wrong.

    2. The attitude that seeks to put self above God, which according to Genesis 3.1-7, was what brought about the separation between God and humanity.

We chose to cut ourselves off from God--but such was the love of God that he did not let things end there. He had created us to be with him, and he was going to have us with him.

The grace of God is simply a short hand way of saying what this passage and the whole Bible is saying: God wanted us with him so much that he took the initiative to come to us, even when the separation was our fault.

We need to continually remind ourselves of this: we are with God because he acted. We turned our backs on God, and he in love still came to get us. All that we do in our lives needs to be grounded in the fact that God in love did what we couldn't and wouldn't do on our own and didn't deserve anyway because of our rejection of God.

As you meditate on the grace of God for you, what thoughts and ideas come to your mind?

PRAYER IDEAS: Spend some time in prayer giving God praise and thanksgiving for the grace he showed you.

Day 2: Our response to God: faith

    READ: Acts 16.25-34

God freely offers us a way to come to him. Through Jesus Christ, we have a God-given opportunity to make our lives complete and whole. God grants the offer, with no strings attached.

But we do need to respond. His offer is not a blanket policy covering the willing and the unwilling. God always gives us freedom. As
