Chapter 1

Yeri held the gem stone up to the light of his torch and admired its glow. He couldn’t believe it, he’d actually found it. Taking a moment to check that no one had noticed, Yeri put the gem in his inventory. After mining this past three months for it he didn’t think a few more minutes would matter. They could wait. This would be a little pay off for all his hard work. He knew once he handed it over he’d probably never have the chance to look at it again. Especially if the stories were true, lost for a few hundred years and a piece of legend he knew Calihan couldn’t wait to get his hands on it.

His mind buzzing with excitement Yeri made an excuse that he needed some air and headed to the entrance of the mine. Once there he paused for a moment and let the bright midday sun bathe his face. So what would he do next? He knew he’d hand it over eventually maybe this evening, maybe tomorrow, maybe. That could come later, for now he felt powerful having it in his possession. Pretending to stretch, Yeri looked back over his shoulder to check that no one was paying him any attention. Good the coast looked clear. Spying a small group of trees off to one side Yeri picked a spot that gave him some shelter and a view of the cave mouth. Once there he smiled to himself, they were all down there sweating and toiling for it and he had it. The fools. Reaching into his inventory he took the gemstone out and again held it up to the light. The only thing they needed now was someone who could turn it on. So what is it you can do? Yeri asked the stone. There were stories that once one stone was turned on it would lead the owner to the others, each one adding a different power to the player. As much as he was excited by this, Yeri was also gutted. He was holding the stone in his hand and nothing was happening. Whoever it was that could turn it on, it wasn’t him. But still for the time he had it, he felt incredible. Closing his eyes he pretended that he was the one, the one they were all looking for, the most powerful player in Minecraft.

Yeri, where the hell you are?

Yeri dropped the gem in fright, if Calihan found him here with it he’d bash his head in. Packing the stone quickly back inside his inventory Yeri decided that he’d wait before breaking the news. Judging by the tone of Calihan’s voice right now it wasn’t the best time to come clean. No, he’d wait until later when he was alone, then he’d pull out the gem and relish in their celebrations. Who knew he might even get a bonus for finding the stone. Eh, coming! Yeri called out making sure the gem was safely hidden.

Where were you?

Just had to get some air that’s all. Felt a bit claustrophobic, Yeri said pulling at his collar and making his way over to the mineshaft.

Get back down there and get digging. Next time you want a break you’ll take one with the rest of them, you hear me?

Yeah Calihan, sure. Just got to me.

Now get your butt back down there. We’re close now I can feel it.

Right, OK.

Wait a minute. You didn’t find it, did you? Calihan asked with a stern look on his face. Taking a step closer he used his extra height to tower over him. Swallowing hard, Yeri hoped he couldn’t read his mind. If Calihan knew he’d run a sword through him or worse hand him over to the others. They’d enjoy taking him to pieces.

No, why?

Just messing with you! Calihan replied hitting Yeri on the shoulder, his face breaking out in a grin. I know you wouldn’t do that to me. Because you know what would happen to you if you did.

Yeah, sure, don’t worry you’ll be the first to know, I promise.

Now go on get back down there, we’ve got a gem to find.

Leaving Calihan and heading back down the mine, Yeri felt a shiver run down his back. He could feel his eyes boring into the back of his head. He’d been lucky this time, but he’d need to
