A teasing title and good start but still the end was disapointing, especially as this copy ends in the middle of the last sentences, if this should have been the last sentence.
Unfortunately this will not be a book to remember.

Thanks to Trent Westbrook, Josh Brown, Dara Syrkin, Joseph Mitchell, and Jason Moser. The fabulous interior art [of the print edition] was done by Trent Westbrook, and he did the back cover with a color assist by Joseph Mitchell. The cover art was done by Jason Moser, of Asylum Ink.

I wrote my portion of the work, starting in 2005, with fits and starts in time and creativity. My desire was to tell a story of dwarves versus everyone else, after a series of wars had devastated the world.

In writing it I had pictured an epic poem story, but with some swatches of prose to enlighten the reader without losing story progress. I was moved by both Josh Brown and Trent Westbrook to expand areas of the story, and wrote to both expand the vision of the world, and to allow for more development of the story. More words came from Josh Brown in prose format and in edits of my words. Dara Syrkin went over my words and made them both proper and sound better.

Thank you to everyone who ever read this work in partial form and gave ideas and contributions, even if they did not end up in printed form. I’d like to give a nod to Derek Handley, Michael May, Grant Gould, Paul Harmon and others who didn’t make it to the end but were part of the process of thought that went into the story and look.

Introduction

This book was created to tell a story of a cataclysm of war. Where no one is trusted, where hope is lost, and where the last battle is not one over land, or insult, but over survival.
