INTRODUCTION
For five days, beginning on June 06, 2014, I held a contest on my professional Facebook page — www.facebook.com/ibecket. Each day I gave away a signed copy of my book The Door to Heaven to randomly selected individuals who commented on each contest’s one rule. On day one, contestants had to comment on the best compliment anyone had ever given them. Day two, contestants had to comment about the best day they had ever had. Day three, contestants had to comment about what happened on the best day they had ever had. Day four, contestants had to comment about the most beautiful thing they had ever seen. Day five, contestants had to comment about the best advice anyone had ever given them.
The comments were so many and so wonderful that I decided to compile them into this little book, which I am giving away for free. This book is meant to be read as a book of hope, to anyone in doubt of goodness in the world. Each comment by each person is a witness to the goodness that other people have done for them; a witness to the surprising way life helps us make one more step forward, just to get through one more day.
May this book help you too. May it be a sign to you that no matter how fearful you might feel, no matter how you might feel weak with weeping and worry, something good might be right around the bend, waiting for you. May the words in this book fill you with hope.

DAY ONE
What is best compliment anyone has ever given you?
The best compliment anyone ever gave me, honestly, was given by you [Becket] when you told me my writing reminded you of a young Anne Rice.
Sarah Marie Cradit
When my coworker said to me, When I Grow up I want to be just like you.
Melinda Lynn Law
Your children have beautiful manners—I haven't seen such respectful children in a long time. You have done a good job with them.
Nicky Akers
Keep your chin up, you're too pretty to look down,
and You seem to possess a great power. I noticed it—in your presence, your demeanor, your grace. Some people have it, some don't.
Joanna Zeller Quentin
It is now your time to shine, Julieanne.
Julieanne Lynch
I was told that I am just like my mother.
Melanie Paulina
Just yesterday, my friend Chris Fronckiewcz said to me, You inspire me,
while we were talking together on the phone.
Traci Fannin-Poole
Thanks, Traci. We are all in it together, just in different ways and at different levels. You do inspire me.
Chris Fronckiewcz
Best compliment—Jesus suffering for me. Also, an enemy once called me ‘indefatigable’ and I took that to be a great compliment.
Frank Mosco
You have a gold heart. You are NOT the black sheep of the family, you are the golden apple of the family. Your heart is as beautiful as your grandmother’s was. You are a blessing. (All given by various wonderful people in my life, and all needed at the points in my life they were given.)
Melissa Barrales
Someone said to me that they thought I dyed my hair, but it’s au natural!
Isla Salisbury
You are what dreams are made of
is one of the sweetest compliments I’ve had.
Megan Benjamin-Evans
That's the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard. Let’s do it!
said by a friend that is as deranged as I am.
Amy Bellino
My son told me once, You're the best Mom I ever had.
Denise McCarty
While studying to be a Chemo nurse I was told I had a kind heart and a gentle soul. I was having such a bad day at that time. A few kind words can change everything.
Cheryl Morse
One night while working at the Kangaroo gas station, a customer told me I have a beautiful smile. Needless to say, that made my night.
Jennifer Sue Frobos
I was once told, You are such a good person.
Emilija Savkić
I work as a caregiver with a mentally handicapped man. I take him around town to do his errands and go to the grocery store and things. I love it when people tell me how helpful I am with him, how nice, how calm and how wonderful I treat him. But I mean it’s not hard because he’s an awesome man and it’s really not hard work. You just treat people the way you want to be treated and everything should work out fine.
Amber Corbett Mellon
That I was the best big brother ever!!
Jason Ghioto
I sent a gift to a friend recently who’d been having a rough time. She told me it felt like I got a piece of me back.
I cried tears of joy being able to do that for her. Don’t we all want to get a piece of us back from each other now and then?
Angela Renee Robinson
On his deathbed, aged 88, my father looked at me and said, Oh you’re here...you look good.
That was the first compliment he ever gave me.
Theresa A Logan
A patient saying: all I wanted was someone to listen to me. You are a wonderful person.
Violeta Trevino
Me: Babe, if you could sum me up in one word what would it be?
Girlfriend: Jedi
Me: Mind=Blown
David Ruckman
When I first got together with my now husband, he knew I'd had a bad past with relationships controlling me. He told me, You’re like a bird who has been caged for many years. You know you have wings but have no idea what to do with them. It’s my job to open that cage and show you how to fly and fly behind you in the case you seem to need help...that’s when I catch you.
Shellie Paige
A silly thing that means the world to me... My daughter, while I was worrying about my weight, said to me, You are NOT fat, you are fluffy and you will have the softest lap and best hugs in the world to give your grandkids when I have some for you!
Then she gave me a big hug. She is 18.
Claudia Donnelly
My partner told me I finally made the house he’d lived in for fourteen years feel like a home.
Mark Allan Gunnells
After I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and had to be in a wheelchair for awhile, my boyfriend always made an effort everyday when I was trying to walk again to tell me that I was looking so much stronger and that I was doing incredible no matter how low and depressed I got. He is always there to show me my strength.
Rebecca Day
I have a friend who lost her son in a tragic accident and I have been talking to her about how her feelings are all a normal part of grief, even though some people give her a hard time about it and she told me, You are a wonderful friend, a blessing, an angel. Thank you for talking to me whenever I need to talk and helping me through this. I Love You.
Amy Carr
I work as a waitress and once as a customer was leaving, she handed me a tip along with a very wonderful note.
Kylie Fineday
I visited a Buddhist temple yesterday and participated in the chants for the first time. Afterwards, I met the resident Lama. After he complimented me on a job well done, he looked over to my friend and said, Do you see his smile? That’s a smile that comes from the inside.
I’m still glowing from that moment.
Joseph R Huber
An angel of a lady, without me knowing, paid my gas purchase of $140.00. As I tried to get the words out to thank her for her kindness, through my tears, I told her of my mother’s recent death and the attempted suicide by my daughter. She just smiled and said things would get better.
Rebecca Brown
My husband told me he waited 52 years to find me because I am his first and last

I had a little girl come up to me on Valentine's Day several years back and told me I was beautiful.
Maggie Pellegrino
When I had my son who is special needs and was told he was going to die, my grandma told me, God chose you to be his mama.
To me, that’s the best compliment I’ve ever had.
Sandy Brummett
Just this morning, my husband told me I am his rock. He never says anything emotional, but he had a really bad day yesterday and I can’t get phone calls at work, and he said he couldn’t feel better until he talked to me. All that after 12 years of marriage.
Angie Clifton Marshall
My son told me that I was the best mom that ever lived, and that we will be together forever in our hearts.
Jennifer Gordon
A nun once told me: You are one of those pure of heart.
Arturo Serrano
For the past 15 years or so, I have been writing poems when family members pass. It’s just been my way of showing my sorrow while honoring the deceased. My family members took to printing my poetry off of Facebook and reading them at the funerals.
Leslie Chaney
A complete stranger told me I reminded her of my Nana, who passed away. She has been gone 12 yrs, and I miss her every day. This person who knew my nana, but didn't know me, made my day.
Nikki Miodus
Someone actually made me believe I was a good person and it's okay to want to be happy.
Elizabeth De La Rosa
Best compliment I ever got? Probably just the squeeze of my hand that I get when I hold the hand of a patient who is scared and needing support. The acknowledgement that somebody knows you are there for them!
Susan Bates
He told me I was like an exotic flower. Sweet but possibly poisonous.
Cat Rodriguez
I got a compliment today while out shopping. I was trying a dress on that was a small, and I normally don't wear smalls with this particular brand and actually could've used an x-small today. There was a lady sitting by my coworker who told me that is a good problem to have and kept telling me which dresses she thought looked the best. It was so sweet and made my day!
Tammie Fox Harris
My father said to me once, I just watched a documentary on Peter O’Toole. He’s just like you—he does whatever he wants!
Shawn Franklin
Thank you for being the ‘hard’ teacher who taught me how to learn.
That is the best compliment that I have received from students.
Ella Maugans
About six months ago a little girl about three or four years old came into the store where I work and she and her mom checked out in my line. The little girl said to me, I like your face! You have freckles like me, kissed by God.
It was probably the sweetest, most sincere compliment anyone has ever given me. Even her mother was speechless and said that the girl hardly talks to anyone, let alone strangers.
Jennifer Miller
I’ve been a nurse for nearly three decades and have worked with the elderly all those years. It can be so sad because most don’t have visitors. And it can be so rewarding. I’ll never forget this little man who was dying and I sat with him talking to him and praying for him. He was weak and had dementia. But before he died he grabbed my hand, lifted his head, and said, Thank you for being my guardian angel.
I was blessed to be there for him.
Carla Ramsey
My birthday was this past Wednesday and a friend of mine who I’d met as I was just starting a very rough divorce two years ago posted this to my timeline. Since I’ve known you, I’ve watched you nurture your inner strength. The roots are healthy and the evidence of your efforts show. I am proud of you for that, ma’am.
Sara Ann Jenkins
Me to my son: I’m sorry that I’m not as successful and put together as I should be.
My son to me: Mom, you’re more successful and put together than most people I know.
Leah A Alexander
A random patient at the outpatient department told me he’d love it if I was his daughter in law —so flattering.
Dana Mendoza
When my Grandma was 80, she and I had such fun talks. She sighed one day and said, Oh Susie, I wish we had grown up together, what great fun we would have had!
I will NEVER forget the impact her words had on me.
ShatteredDiva Rodriguez
Scarred and scared, healed though wounded deep down inside, in the dark, where I live, in my heart, in my mind, closing myself off from the world with all its anguish unbidden and unhidden hate, I am happy in solitude although sorrowful in loneliness, a mouse in a crowd, starlight bursting on stage, a contradiction, hurt yet whole somehow. -Becket
Tammy Allen Parks
Honestly, the best compliment I got was when I was told how well behaved and polite my sons are! Made me feel like I did a good job!
Shelley Lumbard
Best compliment from my hubby: Your butt looks smaller today.
Haha! I love him so much.
Megan Bailey
My daughter said to me: You made a good home for us here.
Judy Huggins
Someone told me I should be proud to have raised such wonderful children.
Cheri Toliver Gibbons
The best compliment I received was from my kids soon after their dad and I divorced. They told me that they knew what I did was hard, but they understood that I was doing it for them and myself. They loved me for being so strong and loving them so much. They told me that they looked up to me because raising 3 kids on my own was a hard job. That was over 5 years ago. I was married to their dad for 20 years. My kids are now 23, 20 and 19. They are my world!
Gina Bosman-Gearin
When I was a young girl I had a hard time looking into adults’ eyes when they were talking to me. One day my sixth grade teacher sat me down and I’ll never forget what she said. Jennifer, why won’t you look at me? You have such beautiful eyes, and if you don’t look at people they will never see how beautiful they really are. You have a sparkle in them like little stars.
Jennifer Burdette
You’re just, different. And I didn’t know I was into ‘different’ until I met you.
Astrid Saltt
For me, it was simple: You are not your sister!
I have a twin sister and an older sister, and we really look alike, so to me, it really meant something.
Déborah Texier
The best compliment I received was from my 15 year old son. During a time when I was feeling really down and weak from so many things going on, he told me that I was such a strong woman. He said that no one that was weak would have been able to go through an arterial bypass when they were 24, than breast cancer at the age of 26. He told me that takes strength. A lot of strength. Needless to say, it gave me the kick in the butt I needed to get out of the whole woe is me
mindset. He has also told me that I should be proud of my scars because they are a badge of honor. Sometimes my son makes more sense than adults do.
Desereé Cundiff
My brutally honest son: You are a little fat, but I think you are beautiful anyway.
Jamie Green
Back in school, a beloved lit teacher once told me I was: An awake one amongst the sleepwalkers.
I always treasured that remark.
Bob Rose
I began my
