    Melissa Szydlek lives in the United States. Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she survived Detroit for many years and has settled into a quieter life in North Carolina.

    The bakery opened at 6:30 every morning except Sunday’s, the only day the business was closed. At 6:00 the line was already down the block and about to turn the corner from England Street onto Dalton Avenue. The morning was cold but the people kept coming, joining the line dressed in big coats and winter hats. A young man joined the back of the line and nodded a hello to the woman in front of him.

    What is it today? he asked her.

    Don’t know yet, she said pleasantly. No sign yet.

    Several customers at the front of the line leaned in toward the large display window. A small streak of yellow light could be seen in the back, but the main retail area was still dark. Wonderful smells wafted out, sweet and full of cinnamon.

    Bagels? You think? a man, third in line, asked out loud.

    The first man in line sniffed the air. Smells sweet.

    Could still be bagels, the third man said hopefully. Sometimes they make cinnamon raisin and cherry.

    God but those are good, the cherry, said the woman standing second in line.

    Scones, maybe, offered a woman further down the line.

    Could be, could be, the first man agreed.

    The line grew quiet in anticipation, many people checking watches and moving about from foot to foot to keep warm.
