About this ebook

Turquoise and silver is an icon of the American Southwest. For generations, people have ogled these gemstones in pawn shops, jewelry shops and antiques stores, looking for a special piece of Native American jewelry that speaks to their heart. Southwest jewelry is now valued and collected around the world. Photographs of collectible pieces reveal what the attraction is about. Whether in shades of pale aqua or deeper aquamarine, blue or jade green, Mary Emmerling reveals that the collector's hunt is about color. And beyond jewelry, the color turquoise appears throughout the Southwest in architecture and decoration. After all, it's the color of calm.

Art of Turquoise - Mary Emmerling

    Acknowledgments

    Introduction

When I bought my first piece of turquoise jewelry in Santa Fe at the Palace of the Governors, I reached down to get a turquoise heart bracelet, and that was the start—I was hooked!

Now the color turquoise is in all the things I love and decorate with—jewelry, clothing and furnishings. Silver necklaces, bracelets, rings, pins, rhinestones and fringe jackets with beads are always in sight, to grab and put on, never lost in drawers or closets. Jewelry pieces decorate my sarongs, sweaters, they’re collected in bowls, on tables and on peg racks. In my living room, hats with turquoise bands, blankets and throws are tossed over chairs, stools and sofas to be pulled off and worn out as a wrap or pulled over laps to watch a great movie.

Looking for fabulous antique and contemporary blankets, clothes, scarves, serapes, and pillows with even a touch of turquoise in it is a passion. I can make any of them into beautiful pillows, shams, placemats and napkins, scarves, shower curtains and bedcovers.

Some other fun ways to bring turquoise into one’s life are with decorated matches in a silver bowl, turquoise flip-flops in a basket or just placed on the floor, cowboy boots lined up along a wall or on a turquoise bench, and my favorite thing to look for: beaded key chains!

Silver pieces with a touch of turquoise are especially desirable, such as picture frames, trays, flatware, letter openers or candle snuffers. The fun in looking for these things—in antiques stores and shows, pawn shops, airport shops, stationery stores and boutiques—is the surprise of finding a special piece for yourself or for a special occasion present.

The color turquoise is a friendly and happy color. It tells people you meet and visitors to your home that you enjoy life. Because turquoise color is achieved by blending blue
