I have found to accomplish something you'll be proud of it takes team support and expertise.

My wife, Carol, tops the list. Her prayers and influence have kept me encouraged and moving forward.

Also, I appreciate my children, grandchildren, and family for their love. They've inspired me to never quit.

My special thanks to Adam Colwell for editing this project; to Duwayne Escobedo, Dottie Escobedo-Frank, and Cherie Martin for proofreading; and to Laura Shinn for the cover design.

Finally, I am in gratitude to numerous friends. I will mention just three who urged me on John Tabor, Bill Rupert, and Francine Katsianis.

May God be honored by this effort.

    Chapter 1:

Ya Gotta Start – Temptation’s Opportunity

"The thief's purpose is to steal, kill and destroy.

My purpose is to give life in all its fullness."

    John 10:10 TLB

I don't know how it is for you, but for me letting God love me is a continual challenge.

It's a constant battle because I've allowed myself to become stuck in a sticky web of temptation. Freedom is what I want above everything. I want to get unstuck. Yet my situation is like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. I often run, hide, and do whatever I can to avoid getting face-to-face with God. This is insanity, of course, because where could I get to that God isn't already there? To be sure, there isn't anywhere I can run or hide where God isn’t already there.

At times, naturally, I'd like to think otherwise. But this downside has caused me to miss the love God has for me. And, that's a big deal. So I realized (finally) things in my life needed to change. I started thinking about how to, seriously, make this happen. Often, it was agonizing. I recall walking into work at the radio station near tears, Oh Lord this pain is terrible. I hurt so bad!

I suppose I wanted to cry because, in part, I felt sorry for myself. Nonetheless, I'm sure God was using my pain as an opportunity to grow-me-up. God confronted me with things I didn't want to necessarily look at in my life. It was stuff that was embarrassing, stuff that I had imagined God knew nothing about. Silly, huh? Anyway, during the process of self-examination and growing I put together seven steps for changing me. I wanted to get unstuck.

These seven steps I'm about to show you for Getting Unstuck are designed to put off your dodge-God attitude and behavior. When you're finished, you'll be better connected to the one who loves you no matter where you've been or what you’ve done. You don't have to accept what I'm saying, but if you'll keep reading, I believe you'll find that your life will improve—no matter how good you suppose it is now.

This is what is ahead: the possibility of getting back something you've been missing. This is my expectation for you. When will you achieve this? I'm convinced the moment you start you’ll feel yourself getting unstuck and begin enjoying the life of freedom God’s love extends to you. Up front let me tell you, this is much more than being issued a harp and a cloud in the sweet-by-and-by. This is beyond winning gold stars and blue ribbons in Sunday school.

Okay, let’s take a closer look at the problem. Let's focus on how we got stuck in the first place. If I ask, What is the number one problem in the world?

What's your answer? You may say, Politics. You may say, Race. You may say, gender or economic inequality, or climate change, or religion. Or you may come up with something else. I'd say, "Yes, any of these can cause problems, but these are only symptoms of the number one problem."

The number one problem in the world is disrespect for God.

A lack of respect for God is the primary reason you're stuck, I'm stuck, and everyone else is stuck. I'll make this absolutely clear in chapter 4, but for now I want to plant this thought seed: Disrespect for God is what is messing up our world.

Here's an example. When Adam and Eve chose to go their own way by eating the forbidden fruit, what did they do? Mainly they disrespected God. When we surrender to a temptation we get in line with Adam and Eve, because we, too, have disrespected God.

Getting unstuck and experiencing freedom will happen as you respect God. This is how this flows: your disrespect for God leads to your disrespect for others, and your disrespect for yourself. Again, disrespect for God is our number one problem. Disrespect causes us to be stuck. In reverse, our respect for God leads to our respect for others, and our respect for ourselves.

Specifically then, what can be done to get unstuck?

What's your story? Everyone has a story. Here's part of my story. In my final years as an announcer on the Family Life Radio network, in Tucson, Arizona, I worked the overnight shift, 11:00 pm to 7:00 am. Every evening when I slid into my truck to drive the three miles to the station, I whispered a prayer for the answer to the silent question I was asked by many calling me: What in the world is going on?

I listened to people’s stories night after night as they told me what was happening in their lives. From various locations in the United States, a caller hoped I’d hear what they had to say. Please listen to me. As I concentrated on what they said, I felt their sadness. I did my best to speak a helpful answer into the microphone or over the phone. Early on, I got a hint of why we remain stuck.

Through the years of hearing and speaking with listeners, I learned something that is life-and-death. It's this: John 10:10 provides a perfect word picture of exactly what’s going on in our lives and world. I read and re-read this verse while reflecting on the words. I discovered the trouble we experience daily, and the way out of our trouble, is laid out for us in a mere nineteen words. Nine words in John 10:10a and ten words in John 10:10b. Jesus' succinct explanation is a treasure chest, a gold mine, a winning lottery ticket. This is what is going on in the world:

John 10:10a is the problem. The thief's purpose is to steal, kill and destroy.

    John
