    Coming Out Party

I told my parents I wanted to have a party and I’d say nothing more.

It’s not your birthday, they both said.

And I told them it didn’t have to be my birthday. Age had nothing to do with it. For that matter, it didn’t need to be for graduation, first communion or a good report card. I just wanted to have a party, during the daytime, with pizza, cake and soda and I wanted to invite all my friends and family. Still, they insisted I tell them what kind of party it was going to be before they okayed it.

And spoil the surprise? Oh no, I couldn’t do that. I wanted them to be as surprised as the rest of the guests. I just assured them this whole thing was on the level and I wasn’t planning any funny business.

I wanted to have a ‘Coming Out’ party. Anyone can just tell someone they’re gay, but that’s soooo passe. If you’re going to let everyone in on your little secret, why not do it with some style? After all, I didn’t think anyone would believe me if I told them individually. Why would they have any reason to think a kid like me is gay?

    It was downright nutty.

They said yes, barely hesitating. I’d piqued their interest, you could say. I asked them to let me take care of all the details and they promised they’d wait until the party began to find out what the deal was.

Yeah, yeah, that meant paying out of pocket for the pizza, cake, soda and all the other goodies, but that was okay. I’ve got a part-time job bagging groceries at Sobey’s. Even still, I didn’t want them to know about the other stuff. Yeah, that other stuff.

For starters, I wanted to buy a box full of pride
