Preface
T his book about using yogic techniques to develop a flat stomach,
is my contribution to the vast and amazing science of yoga. I know that I am reducing the science of yoga to a fitness routine by writing this book, but the condition of the modern-day man is such that basic problems like a potbelly need to be addressed first. Hopefully, in the process, people who have no idea about yoga, or dislike the practice for some reason, may get initiated into this science. I know that yoga is not meant to flatten your abdomen. It is the ultimate science to attain enlightenment, self-perfection and self- realisation. But physical fitness is an important step in the journey towards enlightenment. A healthy and fit man is generally not depressed and only a happy man is capable of being spiritual. Those who are depressed first need to come out of their depression before entering into spirituality and meditation.
The ancient yogis have talked about five different koshas (layers) in a human being — anamai, manomai, pranamai, vijinmai and anandamai. In this book I am working on a part of the anamai kosha, which has the limitation of being stressed and diseased. Asana, the first active step of yoga, is about perfecting the human machinery. There is no other machine in the world capable of converting bread into blood. Hence, it is a machine that should be regarded as a temple to be chiselled and
perfected in every possible way, internally and externally. This is why yoga has techniques to perfect the external body (asanas) and techniques to perfect the internal systems (pranayama, kriyas, bandhas, mudras). This book is part of a series to perfect the human body, the temple inside which you live your entire life. In this book, you will start with a set of easy exercises, and then move on to more and more difficult ones as your strength and your muscles develop. Unless the body is challenged progressively, it will not improve. Like the human mind, the body too, responds to a challenge and tends to stagnate when there is none. A 20-minute workout every day will keep your stomach in good shape. You will also find that the moment you remove fat from the
