      Chapter One

      Tiffany had given up all hope of anything good happening. She moved like a robot with rusted joints, getting out of bed and walking around her rooms for the excuse of doing something; she watched mindless entertainment on the television they had provided her and read the books that were arranged beautifully on the shelves and tried to prepare herself for her death.

      I’m only in my twenties, she thought mournfully. I’m not ready to die. I had only barely started to really live.

      If she thought about the state of her father when he was dragged into the council chamber, she started to cry. Tiffany thought she had long before abandoned any hope of connection with the father who had left her to an abusive mother, who hadn’t done anything to protect her from an even more abusive husband. But her heart had wrenched at the battered ruin of the strong man she had once looked up to. He could already be dead, she thought. It’s not like they would have any reason to tell me. What am I to them?

      When the door to her prison suite opened, Tiffany felt a spurt of dread and unexpected curiosity when a woman stepped through it—with no tray of food. The woman was short, slim underneath flowing clothes that gave her young-looking body an imposing air. Her deep auburn hair was coiled and wrapped around her skull, and Tiffany irreverently thought that anyone who didn’t think she was an anachronism was a fool. Good evening, Tiffany, the woman said, sitting down at the table where Tiffany took her meals.

      W-who are you? Tiffany asked, struggling to control the instinctive quaver of her voice. The woman gave her a smile that surprised Tiffany with its warmth. Suddenly it occurred to her—this was one of the members of the council; Tiffany remembered that she was one of those who had seemed to favor Daniel during the trial, though it was hard for her to say just how she’d come to that conclusion.

      My name is Elsie. A pretty stupid name, especially now that it tends to be associated with cows, but my parents had no idea of that when they named me, and after however many hundred years I don’t feel like making a new one for myself. Please have a seat. Tiffany sat down at the table with the woman, dreading what she would hear. A vampire from the council—that could really only mean that her fate had been decided, couldn’t it?

      I assume you’re here about... about the decision in front of the council. The woman regarded her closely and Tiffany wondered what was going on behind the vivid green eyes. Elsie shrugged and sat back in her seat, her gaze still heavy on Tiffany.

      Yes and no. The council will almost certainly decide against you, your father, and even Daniel, the way things stand right now. Elsie reached out one hand and idly passed a fingertip along the surface of the table, drawing curlicues and whorls even as she continued to look at Tiffany. I will say this for Daniel: he tends to pick women with spirit. Elsie smiled as if there was some private source of amusement for her.
