    Getting Started with Visio 2013

    Introduction to Visio 2013

    Visio 2013 is a software programme for presenting the information in a graphical manner. You can create professional diagrams, drawings and other graphical data related to engineering, business, networking, software, and other fields. Visio 2013 makes it easy to capture your ideas graphically, and then modify them frequently. In addition to that, you can create drawings with great accuracy.

    Templates available in Visio 2013

    Visio 2013 offers many templates to carry out different types of diagrams. For example, Visio 2013 provides you with the Organization Chart template to create good-looking organizational diagrams. Likewise, there are many templates to create diagrams such as architectural plans, flow charts, calendars, network diagrams, electrical diagrams, brainstorming diagrams and so on.

    Starting Visio 2013

    To start Visio 2013, click the Visio 2013 icon on the windows grid.  The Backstage appears as shown. You can select different types of templates from the Backstage to start new drawing.

    Starting a New Blank Drawing

    Click the Blank Drawing template on the initial screen, and then select the units of measurement. Click the Create icon on the dialog. A new drawing without any predefined shapes will appear.

    Various components of the user interface are:

    Quick Access Toolbar

    The Quick Access Toolbar has some commonly used commands such as New, Open, Save, Undo, Redo, Regenerate, and so on. You can add more commands to the Quick Access Toolbar by clicking on the down-arrow next to it, and then selecting commands from the drop-down menu. You can also use the More Commands option and add new commands from the Visio Options dialog.

    File Menu

    The File Menu appears when you click on the File tab located at the top left corner of the window. The File Menu has a list of self-explanatory menus. You can start a new file, open an existing file, save, print, share, and export files using the File Menu. Click Options on the File Menu to open the Options dialog.

    The General page shows the options related to the user interface, office theme, and personalization.

    The Proofing page shows the spelling and AutoCorrect options.

    The Save page shows the options to set the file format, auto recovery settings, and server files location.

    The Language page shows the options to set the language preferences.

    The Advanced page shows the editing, display, save/open, and general options. Under the General section, check the Run in developer mode option to show additional options in the User Interface.
