    Chapter 1

Jake didn't have to be in Gavin's pack to know that the Alpha was going to shoot him.  For Paige to willingly join Gavin's pack, Jake would have to be dead.  Of course, the story Gavin told would pin the blame on Jake, and the big wolf himself would step up to comfort Paige. All of those thoughts flashed through Jake's mind while he was staring down the barrel of his dad's gun.

So when Gavin's eyes squinted just that little bit, Jake knew it was time to move.  He dove out of the way.  At first he thought he'd cleared the bullet's path, but then he felt a sharp pain, and he couldn't breathe.  He tasted blood.

Poor little pup.  You didn't stand a chance against a real Alpha.  Gavin's voice, so cultured and smooth, infuriated Jake even as he sank to his knees.  He struggled to breathe.  He closed his eyes for a moment, welcoming death.  He thought of Paige tickling him after graduation.  With a grunt, Jake pushed up from the ground, stumbling as he turned around to run.

Three shots followed the first and Jake looked down, wondering where he'd been hit.  Coughing, he tasted warm blood. If only he could breathe. He fell again.

Jake?  Jake? Talk to me. He felt an arm around his shoulder.  For just that split second he wondered what kind of game Gavin was playing, and then he smelled his dad's cologne.

    Dad?  What happened.

You're hurt. There's no one around here for miles.  I need to get you to the hospital.  Strong hands pulled him in the direction of the tower.  Jake, have you seen Billy or Paige?

Paige is hurt. We need to get help. Jake said.

Let's get you to the cars first and then I'll go back for Paige.

Every breath was torture. Leaning heavily against his dad, Jake focused on each step.  He collapsed at the edge of the field. His dad bullied and badgered him, half dragging his sorry carcass to the tower, but finally he could rest.

The next hour Jake faded in and out. He opened his eyes to find Paige leaning over him, dark circles under her eyes and her face as pale as a silver moon.  One of her arms
