About this ebook

You don’t need a big budget to give your home that uniquely refreshing quality. You just need a little knowledge and a lot of imagination and the sky’s the limit. It doesn’t matter how your home looks right now.

If you want to make significant design changes make it look new and different, you just have to understand some basic techniques and you can really make your home shine.

If you keep these points in mind, you’ll be able to give your home the feeling that it has really come alive again, even if you have been living there for 10 years or more.

- Don’t pick up a paint brush or spend any money until you have a complete plan for everything you want to do in every single room in the house. Planning is the key to success.

- Don’t let others influence or restrict your thinking. Imagine colors in ways you want them to appear and then find ways to achieve those colors. The right color blend can enhance the look of every room in your home.

- Interior design is not just about the walls. It’s also about the floor coloring and material. It’s about the type of furniture you use and where you place each item in each room.

- It’s about big picture thinking and imagining how the furniture will match the wall colors and the carpet, tiles or floorboards you have in each room, even before you have bought anything or opened a tin of paint.

- Lighting is a major part of your design. Whether it’s a central light fixture and a fancy shade or a series of lights around the room that complement each other, don’t forget that integral part of your design. Also remember that daylight can change the atmosphere because it’s very different to night.

- Curtains, blinds and pictures on the walls are also things to factor into your overall design. What looks better with everything else you want in each room?

- Your bathroom needs a lot of planning as it can be a very small room or a bigger room but it needs to be well thought out because it’s the smallest room in the house and is often neglected when redoing your home. Get a professional to come and do your plumbing and tiling because you can’t afford to get things wrong or you could have a leaky bathroom and that can cause havoc.

- Rooms need a focal point, whether it’s a piece of furniture or a nice painting on the wall. Determine what your focus will be for each room and gear everything towards that goal.

- Don’t forget the safety factor throughout the house. If you have elderly people living there, you need handrails and other means of assistance included in the design. If you have babies or toddlers, you need to include child-proofing aspects in your design.

- Individual rooms need to reflect the needs of the person who belongs to the room. Husband, wife, son, daughter... all have different needs in a bedroom and closet so they need to be taken into account.

Interior design can really give your home a lift. If you intend to live there for a long time, it’s worth while spending the money and time to have every inch of the home designed how you want it. After all, there’s no place like home!
