About this ebook

Life can quickly become out of focus, even for those who have a strong faith. When this happens, the Lord sits us down and has us take an honest look at the road we have set our hearts desire on. He re-focuses us by His Holy Spirit setting our hearts on the Life to come. When this takes place, no matter how hectic our life may be, we are able to cope with it, and rejoice through the hectic pace of life. This book gives us a broad view of what the Lord through Haggai has to say to us.

Roland Gurgel

I am a "conservative" Lutheran Pastor. By conservative I do not mean: "I am against this or that"; or "law orientated". By this I mean: The Bible is the final authority in any and every thing in life. The Bible not only contains the truth, but it is the truth in all that it says. My writings are going to reflect this. I understand, this is not a "popular" view. However, I do not write to be popular, but to present the truth of the Scriptures.

    The Meaning of Haggai

The name Haggai means: The Festive One. The very basic meaning of the Hebrew word is: celebrate, keep (hold) a feast, or to hold a solem holy day. It may be a little surprising that this prophet bearing this name would be sent by the Lord to the returning Jewish captives who were struggling on many different levels.

In simply reading the book of Haggai we find that they had slacked off from doing what the Lord had asked them to do, and as a result the Lord sent them all manner of difficulties in order to wake them up. He scolds them as a loving Father for the road they were walking on. Hardly a reason for a celebration of any kind.

However, the focus is not on what they eventually, and joyfully did - get back to work on the Temple of the Lord - rather the focus is on what the Lord was going to do in the distant future; namely reveal His Glory in the person of His only begotton Son, Jesus; The Desire of Nations. The Lord Jesus was and always will be for the believer the reason to hold a celebration. The heart that is set on Jesus, is a heart that no matter the earthly circumstances, is a Festive One, a Haggai.

Let us now go even unto Haggai and see this celebration which the Lord has made known to us!

    Chapter One

Ah, Me, Oh, My, My Life is Hectic!

In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the Word of Yehvah was in the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel, son of Shealetiel governor of Judah, also to Yeshua, son of Yehozadaq, the High Priest, to speak:

    Haggai 1:1

I do not have the time. I am so busy. I am swamped at work. I have so many things to do at home. I feel stretched. I feel like I am going nuts. No matter how hard I try I just can’t seem to get ahead. I can’t get a grip on things. I need a six year vacation! Just give me a moments rest, a moment’s peace.

Do these phrases sound familiar? I do not doubt that any one of us, and every one of us has said such, or at least the basic theme of these phrases has been expressed by us in one way or another. As we grow older and grow up the growing demands of school, of work, of life in general begins to tug and push and shove us more and more. What results is we become accustomed to it, and it becomes a way of life for us. We then accept it as being normal, and submit ourselves to the expression: Well that’s life.

For some people and to an extent for all of us, a hectic life style is worn as a badge of honor. A banner set up outside, flapping in the wind, and one hears or says, Oh, my life is so hectic! A big smile and grin follow as though we are to admire them, pat them on the back and say, Oh, how great thou art!

There are others out there, who, living a hectic life, say so timidly and in manner which seeks confirmation that such a hectic life style is okay, even though the person – ourselves – secretly wishes and longs to be shown a simpler path, a less hectic life style. These people may desire such, but do not know where to find it, or how to find it. If they find it, they may walk the path for a little while and then because it does not seem to be normal they revert to the hectic life. In the end, they are not happy with either path, or with anything in between.

Then, there are those few, those happy few, who come across to us as so settled, so happy, and so at peace. They live a life that is quiet, calm, and free of everything that causes anxiety. We wonder how is that possible? They can’t be normal! There is something seriously wrong with them! Do we sneer at them a little? Do we look down on them a little to make us feel better? In reality when you get right down to it, such emotions and such feelings are from the seed of jealousy and envy. How can they be so calm and collected when my life is so un-calm
