    It’s Not Me It’s You

He said, No, no, it’s really you.

My face burned. I looked around the crowded bar and grill, then back at him. Had I heard him right? Surely, he wasn’t saying this about me. I glanced over at the bar where the bartender was serving drinks to people who at least looked happy, then back at him again.

Wyatt gave me a smirk, confirming my disbelief. Oh, yeah. Okay. It was me. I said, in spite of my better judgment, You’re not supposed to say that.

He raised one eyebrow and said, Say what?

You’re not supposed to say it’s me; you’re supposed to say it’s you.

    But it is you, Shelly.

I became exasperated, "You said it again! It’s you not me, right? It’s not me. It’s you."

Yeah, well, I thought about that, but it is really you, Shelly. I mean, you’re not the one for me.

You say that like I’m a loser, I hissed, my voice rising. And I can assure you that I am no loser!

Shh, he told me, shaking his head. I didn’t mean it like that. I mean, you’re not that bad. It’s just that you’re an okay girl. You have good looks, sure, and a great career, right? You’re the best publicist in the city. I recognize that. But, I mean, to me, you’re okay. That’s all you are.

I was crestfallen. I was seriously devastated. And he was being so cruel. Why did he have to be mean like that? Well, he had to in order to break up with me. And okay? I was more than okay. Way more. Listen, I said, fidgeting in my seat. I know that I haven’t been giving my all to this relationship. I know I’m a bit too focused on work. But I can change. I can scale back and we can—

No, he said. I don’t have time for that. And you’re making excuses again! We’ve been dating for what? Eight months now? And we’re standing still. That’s all we’ve ever done. I’m in my thirties now; it’s time for me to get serious about finding someone who’s interested in the same things as I am.

He was beyond cruel. I wondered why I had even gone out with him in the first place. Maybe I was just stupid. Or a glutton for punishment. Or maybe it was his good looks, his nice bank account and flashy apartment. I didn’t know. I had thought he was my Mr. Right but now all I could see was wrong. Everything about him was wrong. But then again, it might have been the anger talking. Or the fear.

What I’m saying is this, he said, leaning in towards me. We’ve been together for a while now and all we’re doing is going nowhere. You’re in the same place as when I met you and if I keep dating you, I will stay in this same place, too. When we first met, I thought you were the one. I had high hopes. But now I see we are just treading water. You’re not ready to commit. You’re too ambitious, you’re too driven. You’re too career-oriented. That’s all you care about. You’re not ready to get over your issues. But I am ready to move on.

What does that mean? I asked.

It means, I am moving on, he said. It’s over, Shelly. Sorry, but I can’t stay with you. I need more.

I can give you more, I said, hating the fact that I sounded so desperate. I’ll not work as much. We can take that trip we’ve been talking about.

    Which one?

I thought about it. Uh, the one to the Catskills.

He shook his head. It wasn’t the Catskills, Shelly.

    It wasn’t?

No, it wasn’t, he said and sighed with frustration. Listen, I won’t lie, you are a gorgeous woman.

I blushed, as I did whenever anyone commented on my looks. Yeah, I was pretty with blonde hair and a thin yet sexy body. I wore the right clothes from the best designers and I had the right accessories, as well as an ultra cool prewar apartment. On paper, I was perfect except for this tiny little thing, a thing I couldn’t even name. Something always held me back from having it all and getting to that something was an astronomical task.

He continued, "You’re hot, okay? That’s
