    INTRODUCTION

Serving God is the highest and most satisfying way of occupying our time while on earth as believers. The reality, however, is that serving God is not natural to us, even after we come to know God in a personal relationship. The problem is that of ourselves, our natural desire is to serve ourselves only. Matters are worse for one who is an unbeliever, who does not know God in a personal relationship. Such persons do not even think about serving God. At least a believer is aware of God and in one’s spirit there is a realization that one should be serving God. So the question becomes: Under such conditions, how does one go about rendering service to God? Or to phrase the question from God’s standpoint: How does God obtain willing service out of love for Him from those who are now part of His family through a spiritual birth? This is the type of important questions we will be dealing with in this book, and more. For the reality is that God is worthy of our service, desires our service, and once we learn to serve Him, we delight in serving Him and want to continue serving Him! So the important thing for those who are believers is to get to the place where one is serving God with one’s life while on earth as a child of God. This is therefore one of the key things we will learn to do in this book.

And so in the first section we will be looking at the stumbling blocks which may be preventing believers from serving God in these last days of the present age. Then in the second section we deal with what it means to serve God. It is in this section that we will find the answer to the important question asked above. In the third section of the book, we deal with why it is important to serve God, this being followed in the fourth section with practical ways of rendering service to God. This is followed in the fifth section by identifying helps which God has provided us for serving Him, before turning to a sixth section which looks at God-honoring ways of seeing our service to God in these last days. Many examples are also provided throughout from the author’s own personal life and from Scripture. The book closes with a chapter in the Addendum, which has been included for any person reading the book who may not as yet have a personal relationship with God. Any such person may want to begin there before reading at the first chapter of the first section.

This present book is the author’s eleventh published work. And I truly believe that one of the reasons God had His servant write these books is because we are indeed living in the last days of the present age. And the key motivation for writing the present book, which again I believe is from God, is that those who are believers be serving God until the end of the age, and not be idle, or sidetracked in what is not of God. The reality is that we only pass through this life once, so why not be occupied with giving service to The One Who not only created us, but gave us the forgiveness of our sins and eternal life with Himself? After all, our wellbeing for time and eternity depends on it!

And if you are not convinced that we are indeed living in the last days of the present age, please obtain and read my third book, which is titled, How We Know For Sure That We Are Living In The Last Days! And please understand that when we speak here of the last days of the present age, this is not referring to the end of time. What needs to be grasped is that in God’s word, the last days, mean at least two things. For one, it refers to the entire period of time from the coming of God’s precious Son from Heaven to earth until the end of time, which period is covered by the entire New Testament portion of the Bible. This is what is in view, for instance, when God uses the term these last days at Hebrews 1:2 (adding verse 1 here for context), [1] God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, [2] in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

The second way that the term last days is used is when God says at 2 Timothy 3:1 (adding verses 2 to 5 for context), [1] But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. [2] For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, [3] unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, [4] treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, [5] holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. Here God is using the term the last days to indicate the end of the age we are presently in. And these are the last days we have in view in this book. This is important to keep in mind as one reads the book.

What should also be mentioned before closing this Introduction is that after completing 21 years of formal education and then spending almost 28 years working in Project Engineering in the Corporate offices of a large utility, God called His servant as a non-denominational evangelist in early 1999, then sent him out over 3000 miles, away from family and friends, to the place of service God assigned, and where His servant has been and is still serving Him as evangelist, counselor, author, and publisher. The author is a widower with three adopted children, now married.

And now my prayer is that God will richly bless you as you read this book, and that He will greatly minister to your every need in your life, as only God can!

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…

    SECTION ONE

    _________________________________________

IT IS DIFFICULT TO SERVE GOD WHEN…

It is difficult to serve God when we are not in love with Him or do not know how to serve Him!

One important place to begin - and assuming throughout here that one is a believer - is with the fact that it is difficult to serve God if we are not in love with Him, or if we do not know how to serve Him. If we are employed, we do our jobs because that is what we have been hired to do and that is what we are being paid for. In other words, love does not come into play, although it is true that if we like our job, it is much easier to come to work each day and we will not be looking at the clock all the time, waiting for our work day to end. However, our relationship with God is not like that. It is one based on love. God loves us in a way
