    Day One

The mid-morning sun was warm that spring day in the hills of West Virginia. A warm gentle breeze rustled the leaves on the trees as I sat on my porch with a fresh cup of coffee. I had brought my Bible outside with me and was debating on what to read that morning. It was then that a bird singing in a tree nearby caught my attention. I began to listen to it and to the other sounds of nature going on around me. I heard a chatter and looked up in a tree and saw that I was being watched by a large red squirrel. His tail was wagging furiously as he seemed to be denouncing me for something that I did not know that I had done. I laughed to myself as I watched him. I looked over to my right and out into the yard and saw old tuxedo sitting and staring in my direction. Bowtie is our cat and of course she looks as if she is wearing a tuxedo. Then a blue jay swooped down giving the squirrel all kinds of heck for what reason I did not know. Life, it was everywhere and in everything. It was happening all around me all the time. It was then that I decided to spend a little time in Genesis reading of our Father’s creations process again. I had read Genesis many times before but decided that today I would spend some time meditating on the words that were written there. We read the Bible and often just skim over the words never thinking of their meaning or what they really say. Join me if you will as we take a look at God’s creations process slowly and prayerfully. Let your own thoughts and spirit direct you to commune with your Father and Savior Jesus.

I took a sip of my coffee and opened my Bible to the first chapter of Genesis. I only read the words, In the beginning, before a thought came to my mind. The beginning of what? I know that these words describe what we term the beginning of the creation process. But my mind was thinking beyond that. How do you put a beginning on God? How could you describe Him before the beginning as we know it? Try if you will in your mind’s eye to reach beyond everything that you know and see. Beyond the things that are created. Humans, animals, plant life, water, stars, sun, even the air that we breathe. He was there when there was nothing there but how do you describe nothing for even the air as we know it is something. Beyond all that I can see, beyond all that I can see and beyond all that I can imagine He exists. We search for that which we cannot explain and try to put an explanation on it. All explanations fail at the thought of God. Those who try to explain Him away with evolution must admit in honesty that if they go back far enough in their thoughts that they cannot do that. My mind was reeling by this time with just those three words, In the beginning. I wanted to express with my own words my thoughts. The Bible tells us that God describes Himself as the I Am which is a wonderful, fantastic definition of our Creator but I was looking for my own word. The word that I finally settled on was the word, always. Yours may be different but mine is, always. Always was, always is and always will be. I looked again at the verse and read, In the beginning God. For me it still was not enough I wanted something. Something that in its own way described for me the beginning if you will of God. Something that put a final cap on my thoughts. Then it came to me. As I was sitting there on that porch in His wonderful sunlight with His creation all around me I began to laugh out loud for the words of an old preacher had once again enter my heart and spirit. This old preacher when asked by a skeptic where God had come from answered in this way. He said with a delightful smile, "He didn’t come from nowhere because there was nowhere for Him to come from. For me those words put the cap on my thoughts. The God who came from nowhere was always everywhere. My eyes then settle on the next words of that first
