Chapter One
FIRST LIGHT
They thought they were doomed! Then suddenly the sack burst into a million little pieces and started to spin. The glow around it was more brilliant than any light they had ever seen. They knew that something extraordinary was about to happen! Here’s how it all began…
Six sisters started out late one night to wish their mother, the Queen’s servant, a happy birthday. They were poor and had no money to buy her a gift, so before starting their journey, they gathered up all of their favorite possessions and placed them in a pile. After carefully looking them over, they decided that they would give their mother a lucky pebble that belonged to the youngest sister.
***
The pathway to the palace was dark and the sisters had only a small flicker of light in their lantern to guide them. With each step the darkness became more blinding and they grew more afraid. Startled by a rustling noise, the youngest sister pulled out the lucky pebble and threw it toward the noise. The pebble hit a tree, bounced back, and shattered the lantern. The sisters began to panic as they watched the smoke from the extinguished flame ascend into the sky. They huddled together in the dark, frightened, not knowing what to do.
The youngest sister began to cry because her pebble wasn’t so lucky after all.
The eldest sister hushed her and pointed upward. All of the sisters watched as the rising smoke from the shattered lantern penetrated the dark clouds causing them to disappear, exposing a display of bright stars dancing around in the midnight sky.
The sisters began to cheer because the light made their pathway a little clearer. Then, to add to their surprise, six of the stars fell right before their eyes. Knowing that wishes can be made upon falling stars, each of the sisters reached out and caught one.
Excited, they decided to put five of the stars in the sack that once held the lucky pebble and give them to their mother for her birthday. They could see that the sky was growing dark again, so the sixth star was put into the eldest sister’s pocket to help light their way.
The moment they dropped the fifth star into the sack, the sack magically became encircled by a cloud of bright light and began to spin. As it spun, it exploded into a million little pieces. One by one the pieces molded themselves into a beautiful heart-shaped locket with five glowing jewels surrounding the center. The sisters shouted with joy, excited to have such an enchanting gift to give their Mother for her birthday.
When they reached the palace, a jolly little guard with a short neck and a jiggly chin, whom they had never met before, escorted them to the royal chambers. Before announcing their arrival, he leaned in and whispered, Be careful, the Queen is feeling mean.
The sisters bowed as they approached the throne. They could see their mother standing off to the side. The Queen’s cold stare made them feel uncomfortable. She was about to turn them away when she noticed the youngest clutching something in her palm. What are you hiding?
she asked sternly.
A birthday gift for our mother,
she whispered.
Curious, the Queen callously put forth her scepter, granting them permission to step forward to see their mother.
The Queen watched closely as they hung the magic locket around their mother’s neck and told her there were five unused wishes on it. Never before had the sisters seen their mother so happy.
The Queen was jealous. She had never received a gift as magnificent as the
