About this ebook

Sixteen-year-old Marci Guerrero is one of the best teen hackers in Seattle. However, she’d give up all her talents to know she isn’t crazy.

Marci feels possessed by shadowy spectres that take control of her body and make her do crazy things. While spying on the clandestine group known as IgNiTe, she is confronted by their mysterious leader, James McCray. His presence stirs the spectres inside her brain into a maddening frenzy. Her symptoms and ability to control them don’t go unnoticed by James, who soon recruits her.

As IgNiTe reveals its secrets, Marci starts to realise that half the world’s population is infected with sentient parasites, which are attacking and eventually supplanting the human brain.

Now Marci wishes she was crazy, because this truth is far worse . . .

This book had everything I love in a good read: Sci-fi, kick-ass heroine, a little romance, and it was in general a fun read though it definitely had it's darker side. I had a bit of trouble getting into it as I was reading a PDF copy on my computer (not the way to really enjoy a story). I'm definitely getting a print copy to reread before reading the second book which is being released in August 2016.I loved the fast paced action of the book and probably would have consumed it in one sitting had I been reading it on my Kindle. Sometimes I'd find myself rolling my eyes at the decisions Maci made, especially her reasoning behind them but I've come to realize that if I'm going to read YA fiction, I'm going to have to ignore some of my frustration and just go with the story.

I found this novel to be a well written and incredibly unsettling read, skillfully playing on the fear of being locked in your own mind. The atmosphere of the story is unrelentingly dark, which sometimes made it feel heavy and somewhat difficult to read, but does present a really intreging enemy in the Eklyptors. Although they're not really an original idea (reading as a kind of cross being the slugs from Slither and the Yeerks from the Animorphs series), they do have a rather neat invasion plan. They aren't really even portrayed as an invasive force, more something that has been with us for a very long time. For me, this was a lot scarier. However, the story does have some issues. There are many plot threads running in unison and every time the author raises a new one, she seems to forget all of the rest. For example, the tangent involving Marci's estranged brother was revealed very early on and I was interested to see what role it would play, yet Luke kind of faded from the plot and only appeared once or twice before the epilogue. While it feels as though he will be important in the next story, I felt more time should have been spent getting to know him in this one.The fact that everyone seems reluctant to tell Marci anything. This is a pet hate that I have with novels of this type. You want to recruit someone to your cause? TELL THEM EVERYTHING! Don't leave them in the dark about any aspect of your grand plan. It's inevitable that if you don't they'll unwitting ruin everything for you. I understand the need to maintain mystery in a story but it just feels weak when authors do so by having characters retain vital information for no good reason. In terms of character, I did really like Marci. She was a strong willed and independent protagonist. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast felt a little flat, containing little in way of character. Aidan was the snotty one, Blare was the obnoxious one, Oso was the protective one. There was nothing really about any of them beyond a single attribute and so I found that I didn't really care what happened to any of them. So, all in all, this was a reasonable start to the series and made me curious to learn what would happen next. I just hope that the next character has a bit more in terms of character building and a plot with a little more focus.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Marci has always been a bit different. But there's something inside of her she can't explain. She sometimes feels like there are shadows inside of her head that she has to fight against. Clearly, she knows this is crazy. But when Marci and her best friend stumble across an underground group known as IgNiTe, she learns she may not be as crazy as she thinks and something far more sinister that affects the whole human race may be afoot...

What an intriguing world that the author has created. There's a unique richness to the characters, the setting, and the story that I really appreciated as a reader. Furthermore, there's some refreshing originality in the way the plot rolls out that I felt was a bit different than other YA sci-fi. (Yes, there is still the whole cliche of the female protagonist having romantic angst, but at least it didn't end up becoming the sole focus of Marci's motivation here as has been the larger trend of late.)

Overall, I found this to be a very interesting read. It was quick for its length and easy to understand. It wasn't difficult to get immersed in this world, either. Recommended for YA sci-fi fans, for sure.

An absolutely unputdownable book!Half of the world is infected by parasites that cause the human to change into horrific creatures with wings and claws – living nightmares. Marci is a teen hacker – one of the best in the country. When spying on a group known simply as IgNiTe, the shadowy spectres that have been lurking in her brain begin kicking up a storm, and it is then that Marci is told the truth, she is infected.Welcome to my stop on the Ignite the Shadows blog tour, run by Xpresso Book Tours! Immediately I absolutely loved this book. It may actually be one of my favourites of 2015. It’s intense, gripping and everything you could possibly want in a science fiction story. I want to start off by mentioning the monsters, I won’t say too much about them because they are best read for yourself, but they’re scary and somehow feel incredibly real despite being terrifying creatures with wings and claws. The story is set in our world, which makes it even more believable. It is paced very well and there’s tons going on – I guarantee you won’t be bored reading Ignite the Shadows. It has everything you could possibly want – science fiction, fantasy, realism, a touch of romance and plenty of action thrown in between. Sound amazing? That’s because it is.At four hundred pages there’s plenty going on and the story flows seamlessly. There’s lots of interesting dialogue and I even found myself laughing a few times. I think that says a lot when a book can be scary at times as well as funny. As for the characters, there’s a great mix. Marci is great, she’s a really strong character and she kicks butt. I always find female characters like Marci really interesting, she’s definitely not the damsel in distress, she fights for herself. James and Aydan are also characters that really fascinated me. They all have a great amount of depth and intrigue – you won’t find any one dimensional characters in Ignite the Shadows.Ignite the Shadows is a book that is full of secrets, it dots little bits of information throughout the story and continually leaves you want more. While at times this can be frustrating, it just makes the ending all the more satisfying. I absolutely adored this book, and have added Igrid’s other books to the top of my TBR list. You can check out the Morphid Chronicles (Which sounds amazing!) online!

The first thing to be said about Ignite the Shadow is – when’t book 2 out? I want a copy!Ok so to say I enjoyed this book would be the understatement of the century, 5 stars just doesn’t seem enough. The book is 400 pages so I did worry I wouldn’t have time to finish it. No problem, this is such a page turner I wasn’t able to put it down, one all night reading fest and it was finished. The story is very well paced, keeping you on your toes throughout, there is plenty of suspense along with more than a few slightly scary moments and a couple of surprising twists.I believed everything that happened, which is a frightening thought, although I do always say the mother-in-law is a monster so who knows. Maybe I’m right!I loved the characters and how well developed they are, especially young Marci. I really felt for her, wanting to give her a hug. She seems a lovely young girl who doesn’t deserve half of what she is going through.Young adult or not, this is a book anyone into sci-fi and a bit of mystery will love this. Enjoy.Just one more thing … Ingrid I need to read book 2! please. NB: I received this book free for an honest review
