    Episode 12: Age of Darkness

You're not going with us, Lucy, and that's final. Captain Robert Carver pulled hard on a rope, and a sail on the Sunbird inched up the mast. One of his crew hung from the rigging holding up a lantern so they could see the sail's surface; the blackness that had descended upon them had not lifted. Quite the reverse. The sky was black, the sea was black; there was no moon and no stars. Even their lamps and candles seemed feeble against this eerie darkness.

Robert scowled at the sail; he'd spotted a ragged hole in the middle. Genevieve, we've got another one that needs mending, he barked. He let go of his rope, and the sail dropped down again.

Lucy crossed her arms. I'm going, and you can't stop me.

Robert worked at freeing the sail from its footing so it could be repaired. What, you'll chase after us in that bucket of a fishing boat? That thing couldn't make it three leagues in open water without sinking.

It got us here, Lucy snapped. It got me to you. You could show a little gratitude, you know.

Robert glanced at her. Anja helped you, he said loftily. "You shouldn't even be here, Lucy. If mom and dad knew what you've been up to, you'd be in so, so much trouble. And if anything happened to you, I'd—"

Pudding and Mordecai stumbled by, carrying a piece of timber between them. They exchanged a meaningful look. Begging your pardon, but quite a lot has happened to us already, Captain Carver, Pudding said. And our captain has seen us safely through all of it.

Mordecai nodded his vigorous agreement. I'd follow Captain Smokeheart to the ends of the earth. No ice sorcerer is going to slow our captain down!

Robert threw his hands up in the air. "And Smokeheart? Smokeheart? What a ridiculous name! How do you expect anyone to take you seriously with a name like that?"

I didn't want you to know it was me when you heard about me, Lucy said stiffly.
