    About this ebook

    This particular story is about a dream whereby Olly imagines himself travelling the world on an overnight whistle-stop tour.  His first journey comes about on the back of a very special swan who lives at his local park.  After flying to various locations around the world, he then explores a jungle on the back of a tiger, before befriending some natives and undergoes a whole host of further adventures around the globe. 

    Done in a whistle-stop tour format, this book aims to make listeners/readers aware of the world around them, and of the many different cultures, habits and customs of those from other parts of the world.  Besides making others more tolerant to the ways and customs of those from different cultures, it is hoped that this book will also encourage young readers/listeners to travel and see the world during their later years.

    Mat Gardener is a UK based author with a background in complimentary therapies. He also has a very keen interest in the welfare of young people and environmental/conservation issues.  Both of these interests, prompted him to write three series of books aimed at keeping young people safe from physical and emotional harm. The author is  also seeking to highlight conservation issues and social welfare issues such as bullying,  and low self esteem.  Each book in the series is designed to inspire and give hope to young readers/listeners wherever possible, especially where they face difficulties in life.       Up, Up and Away - Mat Gardener

      Introduction

      One evening, a young boy called Oliver had an amazing dream; a dream that was to take him all over the world, in just one night.  This story is about the adventures he had that night as he lay in his bed.

      Under normal circumstances, it would be dangerous to do many of the things that Olly did during his adventures that night, such as riding the swan and some of the other animals he met on his adventure.  Because his experiences were only part of a dream however, he was perfectly safe at all times.  Fortunately, he knew that it is never wise to get too close to swans and other wild creatures in real life, because you can never be sure of their reactions.

      Making Friends

      As well as being a very bright boy, Oliver was also a very friendly boy too.  He liked to be known as Olly most of the time; to him it sounded much friendlier.  Being a very clever boy, Olly knew that being friendly to those around us can be of great benefit and open up lots of exciting opportunities. 

      Besides being very friendly, Olly had a very good imagination too.  He was also very fond of animals.  Even though they weren’t human, Olly used talk to them as if they were good friends and say Hello, my name’s Olly? What’s your name? or, how are you today?

      The animals used to like the way that Olly spoke to them in most cases.  From the tone of his voice, they could tell that he wasn’t going to do them any harm.  Olly’s strategy used to work very well with large dogs, and other big animals.  They soon stopped barking or growling once he’d said hello to them.  Olly certainly had a way with animals.  Even robins and other larger birds would respond well to his friendly talking to them.

      As a treat after school, Olly often used to go to a nearby park with his parents to see the various birds that lived there.  It was this part of his daily routine which was to prompt a truly amazing series of dream later on in the day. 

      Just Another Day

      When Olly got up on this particular morning, the sun was shining brightly, and there were lots of birds singing in the trees at the bottom of his garden.

      "What a beautiful day.  It’s a pity I’ve got to go to school," Olly told himself sadly.  "Never mind," he’ assured himself by way of consolation, "I’ve got some of my favourite lessons today; they should be good.  I can play tomorrow instead."

      Much to Olly’s great delight, he remembered that he had geography first thing that morning.  Geography was one of his favourite lessons.  He always liked geography because he enjoyed learning about other parts of the world and the people who lived in these different regions. 

      Some of Olly’s school friends such as Chan and Kamal had relatives who came from different parts of the world.  They often spoke about where their relatives came from and he enjoyed learning about their different ways of life and the various climates in those countries.

      ‘Come along now Olly, his mother told him.  ‘Your father will be down in a minute, get on and have your breakfast or you’ll both be late.’  Olly didn’t need telling twice.  In no time he had gobbled his breakfast down and gathered together his things for school; he then had to wait for his father who was running a bit late that morning.

      ‘Now have you cleaned your teeth Olly?’ she asked him, whilst his father finished eating his toast. 

      Yes Mummy, he replied obediently.  Shortly afterwards, Olly’s father told him to get in the car.  Mr Jackson then took Olly off to school, before travelling on to his place of work.

      When Olly walked into his usual classroom, Miss Platt was setting up some video equipment to help her with the morning lesson.

      Good morning Miss, he said cheerily,

      ‘Oh good morning Olly,’ Miss Platt replied.  ‘I hope you are going to enjoy today’s’ lesson.  I know just how much you enjoy your geography lessons.  Today I’m going to be talking about the worlds’ many desert areas, and how people are able to live in such barren landscapes.

      "Really Miss.  I’ve always wondered how people can live in places where there isn’t any water," Olly
