    I’m so sorry for your loss. Mike Morrison was a great guy.

    Thank you. Kayleigh shook hands with Joe, her dad’s old neighbor.

    It’s lovely to see you back in town, Joe went on.It’s just a shame that it isn’t under better circumstances. Your dad used to talk about you all the time. He really missed having you about the place.

    I missed being here, but you know how it is. Kayleigh shrugged. Anyway, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’m wanted over there. Barely pausing to hear Joe’s goodbye, she hurried away to the other side of the room and pretended that she was busy rearranging food at the buffet. She’d gotten the definite impression that Joe wanted to talk more about her dad, and she wasn’t ready to be reminded of the fact that she could have come home more often to see him, should have come home more often. She’d just been so caught up with things back in New York and she’d always thought they had all the time in the world, only now their time had run out.

    How are you holding up? Kayleigh looked up to see Madison, her best friend from high school.

    I’m OK.

    You look it. Madison put a hand on Kayleigh’s arm. "It is all right to cry, you know. Your dad’s just died and you’ve had to deal with all of this by yourself. It’s all right if it’s a little overwhelming."
