    Are You Wearing a Mask?

Not Being Authentic Can Create Illness and Depression

Do you feel there is something inside of you that might never see the light of day, but which is really the true essence and expression of you?

Many of us believe we are destined for something great, but when we think about how we could achieve that greatness, we end up burying our dreams because we feel silly, or are told they are not realistic. Most of us don’t believe in our abilities, or we don’t believe we have the luxury of time or money to develop a whole new version of ourselves. But when we keep our true selves hidden, it can create a whole host of issues such as physical ailments, mental disorders and behavioral quirks.

What happens when we walk around day in and day out without sharing our thoughts and dreams with those around us? We feel lost, alone. We feel like we are living a lie. We feel that nobody really understands us, or even knows who we are. And that’s true, because we aren’t sharing our true self with others!

Instead, we assume inauthentic roles. We begin living under social / gender / vocational roles that might not really apply to us, or at least the version of us we wish to be. Perhaps we yield to the role of dutiful wife and mother when we really want to go back to work and become an internationally successful CEO. Perhaps we are a successful CEO who wants nothing more than to become a stay at home painter. Living under false roles makes us feel smaller, not worthy. The result? We end up withdrawing into an empty shell of ourselves; feeling like our light is getting dimmer and dimmer with each passing day.

Not being authentic is also making us ill. By holding our dreams inside and not letting them express fully, we are stressing ourselves out and compromising our immune systems. We all know that stress leads to depression, stress induced cancers, auto-immune diseases, high blood pressure, psoriasis, obesity, heart disease, and digestive issues – the list goes on and on. Why do we allow ourselves to be damaged by our inactions?

In addition, not only can a person end up making himself or herself sick, I also believe that not expressing ourselves is a contributing factor to mid-life crisis. How many of you have experienced someone, or even yourself, going through a midlife crisis? Completely out of the blue, their whole world turns upside down – they may dress differently, act differently, give up their careers in search of something different…you know the signs. Why do they do that? Because they have not been expressing themselves, and that pressure builds up until it explodes in fast cars, new careers and younger partners. We don’t have to do that.

On the outside we display repetitive natures. We act and react from within indoctrinations from our culture, family or community. But inside…ahh…that’s where the magic
