    Prelude

At the end of a grueling day Jesus and the disciples would typically find a place to eat, unwind, and spend the night. This was often times their favorite part of the day. They would just hang out as a bunch of guys, eating, goofing around, and recapping the day’s events. Jesus would open up to them and explain things he had said or done in more intimate detail. Like I said, there was also a fair amount of goofing around and Jesus had a knack for being right in the middle of it. They knew he was a prophet, perhaps even more, yet he was perfectly content to just be one of the guys. In fact, he embraced it.

One afternoon James had found a nice walking stick along a creek bed when he was getting some water. It was perfectly straight and just the right height. He had been playing with it and parading around with it all day. In his running commentary about it the walking stick was all sorts of things including a king’s scepter and Elijah’s staff. He dropped it several times to see if it would turn into a snake just in case it was also Moses’ staff. He swung it around and twirled it as they walked. At least two of the other disciples had received minor stick injuries as James amused himself and gradually got on all their nerves.

Predictably it was John, James’ brother that finally blew up about it. They were hanging around in a little courtyard after a nice meal, which should have made everyone happy. It probably did and that was the problem. For the two brothers it seemed like they were happiest when they were fighting. So the stick was snatched out of one brother’s hand while words were exchanged. A shin was kicked a little too hard and the rest of the disciples took notice. It was going to be one of those evenings
