    Calum’s Fort

Calum waited patiently for John to give up pretending he’d intended to go the wrong way and, after a few minutes of tramping around in the bush, John returned and pointed south.

Our fine English colonel is that way. He set off without waiting for Calum’s comment.

Calum watched him go and grinned. The big man kept him sane in a mad world. One day he’d tell him how much he meant to him. But not now. Later. Aye, much later.

He stepped out of the trees and onto the road. John was watching a mail coach coming up from the south. We should m’be stop him and ask if he’s seen the English, Calum said.

John turned slowly and looked at his friend. D’ya think we should?

Calum ignored his ironic tone. Aye, I do.

John waved him forward. Then you do that, laddie. He waited for Calum to step further into the road. And the guard will shoot you in the head with his blunderbuss. He raised an eyebrow. Y’know what one of those is, d’ya not?

Calum shrugged and continued to watch the coach thundering up the wide road. I’ve seen one or two. He raised his hand as the coach approached. And dropped it quickly when the guard pointed a blunderbuss at him and suddenly the snub fifteen-inch flared barrel looked like the mouth of a cavern. John stepped up beside him and watched the coach disappear around a bend. He’s not seen the English, then?

Calum brushed off the dust from the coach’s passing and set off south without answering.

Not easy to miss, two hundred tired English laddies trudging up here to fight the Frenchies. He chuckled quietly.

They would’ve stopped, Calum said, but I’m thinking they saw you and you frightened them off.

Aye, I frightened them off, John said, striding up alongside. Or m’be they had mail to deliver. Aye, that’ll be it. Mail to deliver. He glanced at his friend. Big gun the wee guard had, d’ya not think?

    Seen bigger.

    Aye, we have that.

By the time Calum and John had walked a mile on the easy road, the young Shawnee brave had covered three times that through thick bush and was standing in front of his chief, Fireheart, avoiding eye contact.

The chief’s jaw was clenched so tightly his bones stood out white through his skin. He controlled his anger and looked down at the brave. It was unreasonable to expect one so young to fight and die in his first battle, and against greater odds. But he did expect it and was bitterly disappointed that the boy had run back to the camp. Disappointed as only a father could be.

If we go now, the boy said, finally looking up at his father, we will catch them.

    The chief felt his
