From the Ashes of Rebellion
The dawn-light cast itself down upon the field and warmed the land in an all-encompassing blanket. Even though it illuminated every alcoveof shade with its encroaching fingers of light, the dawn carried with it an overhang of gloom, as if to act as a precursor to the day that would soon follow. It was not just any other day; it was a day that everyone had been waiting for – either with cocky expectation or reluctant sorrow. This was the day that the RoveynArmy would crush the rebel force that called themselves theGolden Stags, and with their defeat, bring down their leader, CyranTalpich. This day was also Skylar’s first bittersweet battle as an officer.
The twenty-five year old soldier had only graduated from military school five months prior. The first month was spent doing drills and preparing. The next four were spent on the frontline as a foot soldier. It was not common for someone so young and so fresh to have been promoted to the rank of captain so soon; but it was a decision that had been made in the wake of Roveynofficers defecting to the Stags. Being one of the most capable and talented of the current field soldiers helped him to gain the rank, but the promotion had come to him most unexpectedly. The rebels managed to attract so many officers by claiming to fight against the corruption that had been sown so deep into the Roveyn Kingdom’s politics. They were also backed by very lush promises of the elites that joined them, which for most wasthe bigger draw than corruption. The power that monetary value held in the minds of most men had no sway over Skylar, but the corruption aspect was something he considered frequently. While the Golden Stags might have gotten a surprise advantage at the start due to the massive defections, the Roveyn Army had almost completely suppressed them; therefore, this battle would probably be the final push.
Many considered the young man to be extremely lucky to be in the middle of the fray, as it granted him the opportunity to lead ten other men into battle on this morning that swelled with tension and bloodlust all around. The squad he was in command of was small, but he had expected and hoped for no more. Skylar’s unit made up one half of a pincer attack that the Roveyn Army had positioned in an attempt to draw out the enemy commander. The plan was for his unit alongside a secondary unit to sweep up the sides and unite in the middle while a third, larger unit struck hot, charging through the middle in support.
As the light continued to creep over the battlefield, Skylar’s unit stole into their position halfway up the field. The Roveyn Army had the advantage in this battle; they had caught up to the Golden Stags while they were in the midst of a retreat. Their scouts had discovered that they were holed up in the forest at the end of the plains. It was not even a battle that had caused them to retreat. The rebels were fleeing in an attempt to change strongholds, as the Roveyn Army had been seen marching on their last one – a pile of old ruins in the
