    Chapter One

What the hell was that? he screamed, as he saw a dark shadow jump across the road, right in front of his car. He immediately slammed on the car brakes but he couldn’t avoid hitting it. Oh God. Did you hit someone? his wife Annie asked, with more than a hint of anxiety in her voice. Damn it. he screamed, steering his car into the side of the country road.

He jumped out of the car and immediately scanned the area looking for whatever he hit, hoping that it wasn’t a person. The cold wind cut through him like a knife and he found himself shivering. Even though it was dark, the bright new moon shone down from the sky and he could clearly see that the road was empty. Whatever he hit, must have run off.

Back inside the car he saw that his wife was close to tears. It’s ok honey. It was probably a deer but whatever it was, it’s not dead because its disappeared. he told her. Thank goodness. I was just nodding off when I heard the thump. Are you sure it’s not lying injured at the side of the road? she asked. He shook his head. Nothing there, so don’t worry about it. Damn country roads. he replied, cursing under his breath.

Starting up the car again, they continued their journey. Just another four hours to drive and they will have reached Dundee. He hated driving in country roads because of this very situation. Deer always seem to jump out in front of cars. Only last week he read in the newspaper of one of those damn deer causing a fatal crash and he was glad that he was a city dweller, as nothing like this happened in the city.

How long now Robert? Annie asked, now finding the tiredness overwhelming. I don’t think we can drive all the way tonight. How about I find us a place to stay and we can set out in the morning? he asked and she immediately agreed. Right then. I’m going to stop in the next village and find a B & B. My nerves are shattered. he told her.

An hour later they drove into the village of Inverbaggin and he looked around for a B & B but couldn’t see any signs. I think we’ll try that pub over there. he told her, pointing to a white building along the street. Maybe they have rooms or can suggest someone that can put us up for the night.

As he pulled into the side of the street, he heard a clanking noise coming from the car engine before it suddenly conked out. He tried the ignition again but it became quickly apparent that something had broken in the engine and once again he found himself cursing. What is it? Annie asked him. I think that damn deer did something to the engine. Damn it all to hell. he replied, looking around for any sign of a garage. He spied a garage several hundred yards along the street and sighed with relief.

Come on. Let’s get a bite to eat at the pub and then I’ll go to the garage down there for some help. he told his wife, as he got out of the car. Standing outside the pub, A Man and His Wolf, he couldn’t help but think that the pub had a very strange name. He shook his head. Come on honey. he told his wife, as he helped her out of the car. I’m bleeding starving. Annie smiled at him. Truth be told, she was more tired than hungry but thought perhaps a bowl of soup would warm her up. It was mid March and very cold and she stood outside the pub shivering with the icy wind.

Just as they opened the front door of the pub, they met a man in his early fifties, who told them that the pub was just about to close. Robert looked at his watch. "But it’s only 9pm. Why would you close
