    Since its establishment 114 years ago, the Detroit Athletic Club (DAC) has played a crucial role in the amazing history of the City of Detroit. Originally a club for amateur athletes, it was reorganized in 1913 by prominent automobile and industrial leaders. In that year, Albert Kahn, a renowned architect, designed the magnificent six-story clubhouse that still stands in the heart of Detroit's theatre and sports district.

    Beginning with the birth of the original club on Woodward Avenue in 1887, this book chronicles the history of the DAC up to the present, in over 200 vintage photographs-many never before seen outside of the club. Images gathered from the club's archives cover the formative years at the first club, the building and opening of the new club, the DAC's great athletic traditions, its membership and staff, social activities, the art of the DAC and its magnificent restoration at the end of the 20th century.

      THE ORIGINAL DETROIT ATHLETIC CLUB

      THE FIRST REPRESENTATION OF THE DAC’S FIRST CLUBHOUSE. This is an 1887 architect’s drawing of the clubhouse created by the firm of Gearing and Stratton. In addition to being an architect, J.V. Gearing was a founding member of the club. He was also the Wayne County Notary before whom the 29 founders appeared, on April 5, 1887, to present their Articles of Association, officially launching the DAC. Gearing’s company received approval from the club Board of Directors to build a $12,000 clubhouse in August of 1887.

      PROBABLY THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPH OF THE DAC CLUBHOUSE. This image was taken sometime between completion of the clubhouse in March of 1888 and October of 1889, when a gymnasium was added to the right end of the building. Construction of the clubhouse had proceeded at breakneck speed during the fall and winter of 1887 so that the first annual meeting in March of 1888 could be held in the new, unfurnished building. Note that a 10-foot wooden fence is in the photo but not in the architect’s original
