Props:
A penny
An old stuffed toy
Point 1
(Hold up the penny)
(As you ask the questions, let someone from the crowd answer.)
Q: How much is this worth?
Q: In today’s society what can this buy?
Q: 50+ years ago what could this buy?
The value of the penny had a whole different meaning back then. In a child’s eyes 50 years ago, this was a treasure.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
Point 2
(Hold up old stuffed animal)
Picture this: You are turning 5-years-old today, and you are extremely excited! Your best friend gives you your gift. You open it up, and it’s your best friend’s absolute favorite toy. It’s kind of old and loved—but because you know that this gift cost your best friend so much, you feel completely loved. Suddenly, it’s not about how much money was spent, but who gave it to you, and what that gift meant to them.
Ephesians 2:4-5
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
What we deem valuable, and what others deem valuable, can be two totally different things in life. We are to value what God values, to treat valuable what He treats valuable. The most valuable thing to God is people. He loved the world and valued the world so much that John 3:16 happened. He gave.
Q: When we see something as valuable what do we do?
We invest time.
We invest money.
We invest energy.
Sometimes our view of value can get off. We can get overly obsessed with something and neglect what God sees as valuable.
Romans 8:32
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things.
Until we know how much we are valued, we’ll never fully appreciate the value of what Jesus did for us. If you’ve ever felt like you are unvaluable to God—think about this scripture. He who did not spare His own son.
Point 3
I want everyone to close their eyes. Now picture in your mind the most precious person or thing you can think of.
Q: What would you do for that person?
Q: What would you do to protect that person or thing?
Now imagine the most rotten person on the planet, someone who’s stolen, cheated, or killed. Now imagine giving the person you love, in exchange for that rotten person. That is the exchange God did. Jesus for us.
Matthew 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Jesus knew things had value to us, but He wanted to make sure we realized that our value should be in the kingdom of God—or what God sees as valuable.
Q: How much were we worth to God?
We were worth the life of Jesus in His eyes.
That’s the most valuable thing God had. His Son. Our value, our price, was worth the son of God. That is amazing!
God values us!
God desires to spend time with us.
He gave us the highest gift He could give.
He wants to move heaven and earth for us.
Q: When we look at other people, do we look at them through the eyes of God?
Q: Do we see that they are worth our time and love?
1 John 3:1
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
Even when the world was in sin, God looked at it and valued it. He valued us so much that He literally took us into His family, and we became not just step children but sons and daughters of God. We inherited His promises, His name, and who He is. Now, as children of God, we should value what our daddy values.
Point 4
(Tell a personal story of something you value, but maybe someone else wouldn’t see as valuable.)
Value isn’t always about worth or cost. It’s simply because of love. You love or value an object that someone gave you, even if it’s something that in other’s eyes is useless. It holds value to you, because the person who gave it to you holds value to you. I’m not saying keep every single thing that people give you. If we did that—we’d have an overflowing amount of stuff!
Q: Have you ever kept an old birthday card that had valuable words in it?
Q: Why did you keep it?
Q: How about a random object from when you were a kid?
Q: Why did you keep that?
When someone values us—we want to remember.
Don’t let your value get distorted.
We have to see ourselves as valuable. When we degrade our own value, we will have a warped view of things. If we don’t treat our life as precious to God, then we won’t do it with others either.
