Baby Blues - Teona Bell

Chapter One

So where to today? Troye asked, his blue eyes drawing her in as they always did. April caught a sigh before it escaped. Troye liked to tease her. He said it was his eyes that captured her two years ago when they first met, and he was right. How she loved those eyes, but not just his eyes, his smile, his touch, and his nature. He was everything a man should be. In her view, he was perfect. She loved him with everything inside her, and she had thought it couldn’t get any better between them until it did—when he asked her to marry him.

April buckled herself in and leaned back in her seat. I don’t care, wherever. Let’s just get out of here. If I read one more word about genitourinary or a nasogastric tube, I think I’m going to throw up.

He chuckled and touched her cheek with a big but soft hand. Troye was a genius, and he’d never done a day’s hard labor in his life. Aw, poor baby.

April laughed and smacked his hand away. Boy, you want me to hurt you, don’t you?

Yes, hurt me.

Why does it sound dirty when you say it? She eyed him while he started the car and pulled out into traffic. Troye could afford the Jaguar XJ he drove and probably much more. Most of the people she knew said she had lucked out getting with a doctor. The haters said she was after him for his money. She didn’t care. Troye could be dirt poor, and she would love him.

Because she couldn’t go long without touching him, April reached across the bucket seats to lay a hand on his thigh. She felt the muscle there tensing beneath her touch. Nice body, decent in bed—after she taught him what she wanted. The plus was that he listened and wanted to learn. Those jealous cats didn’t know what she had beyond his wallet, and they never would.

Did Cale call you back about the summer house? she asked.

He nodded, not taking his eyes off the road. Yeah, we’re set for using it a month in August.

I can’t believe you’re taking off a whole month. The sigh she had kept in earlier slipped out now. You work so much, and now that I’m back in school, we don’t get a lot of time together..

His brow crinkled, and he glanced at her. You’re not regretting it, are you? I don’t want you to feel like I’m ashamed of you or that you’re not good enough, April. You’re everything to me.

Her heart skipped a few beats. I know. You’ve proven that too many times. No, I want to be a nurse. You gave me the push, and I’ll be finished soon enough. I just get whiny sometimes.

Yes, you do.

Bum! She laughed and punched his arm.

April.

She tensed. That tone sounds serious.

The blue eyes darkened. She stared into them, wishing he could look back at her rather than focus on the road. Taking what she could get, she waited for him to speak.

What do you think about us having a baby right after we get married?

Her mouth fell open. We’re getting married next summer when I finish school. You want a baby when? A year after?

His gaze slid to her legs, encased in tight jeans. Winter was fairly mild at lot of the time in Atlanta, but she had always been sensitive to a drop in temperature, so she liked to dress warm. Troye kept her comfortable enough in the car to remove her coat. He said it was so he could get a good look at her body at all times. No woman ever felt so desired.

I wouldn’t mind starting now, he confessed.

She gaped at him. You’re serious, aren’t you?

His fingers tightened on the steering wheel a second, and then he seemed to force himself to relax. I’m being selfish. We’ll wait. You’ll just be finishing school and will probably land a position right away. Here I am pushing you to get pregnant, which would mean time off. Forget what I said. I’m sorry.

Don’t be sorry. She squeezed his arm. There’s nothing wrong with it. The timing just isn’t right. I want your baby too. Three actually.

His brows went up. Three? Why the odd number?

I don’t know, but I see those beautiful blue eyes on mini-me’s and mini-yous, and I can’t wait.

His bright smile flashed. Now you have me imagining an army or robotic babies that look like you and me.

I can’t help where your crazy mind goes, sir.

Funny. Okay, let’s take it one step at a time. First, you become my wife—Mrs. April Sheehan. Then you have my children. A year after?

She rolled her eyes, amused. Fine.

April replayed the sound of his last name attached to her first. She had been doing so since a month after meeting him. The pairing of names wasn’t perfect, but they would be. She would make sure of that. They would have little mixed kids with smooth bronze skin since Troye was white and she was black. Her rich brown tones and his pale Irish ones, she thought with affection, would make such beautiful babies.

April shut her eyes and touched the button that would make her chair recline. Another satisfied sigh escaped her. Troye?

Hmm? came his deep voice.

I love you.

I love you too, baby.

April drifted off to sleep.

* * * *

April cried out, tears coming to her eyes. It hurts. Stop, please.

I’m so sorry, April, the gentle voice said. I need you to open you eyes and look at me. Can you do that?

No.

Try, sweetheart.

She wanted to tell the person to go away and leave her alone. No amount of gentleness in her tone would make the pain that throbbed in April’s head recede or the ache in every muscle. Blue eyes shined amid the darkness behind her eyes, and that’s what she wanted to focus on.
