Suggestions For The Cleaning And Management Of Percussion Arms - George Lovell

    Rifle.

    INTRODUCTION.

THE General Commanding-in-Chief, in His Lordship’s circular order, dated Horse-Guards, 12 October, 1841, having pointed out, and pressed upon the attention of commanding officers of regiments, the great importance of, and the advantage which the service must derive from, a due and early instruction of the soldier in the cleaning of his arms, so that every man may eventually be entrusted with the implements necessary for the purpose,—it has appeared to me that a little book containing a plain description of all the component parts of a musquet of the new percussion pattern, with a set of simple and short rules for the due cleaning and management of percussion arms generally, now that they are introduced into the service at large, would be found useful, and tend to forward the views and intentions of the Commander-in-Chief; I have submitted this my opinion to the Master General and Board of Ordnance, who have been pleased to sanction such a publication; and I now offer it under the title of Suggestions, in such a shape, that every man may have it in his hand if he will.

The object has been to show the most easy and effectual way of cleaning the arms, the proper course in which they should be taken to pieces and put together again, and the general care of them in service.

Although these Suggestions refer, in a direct manner, only to the arms of the regular regiments of the British army, it is hoped they will be found equally useful to the Royal Marines and Naval Service at large,—to the troops of the Hon. East India Company, whose percussion arms are constructed upon a similar principle,—to the Constabulary Force in Ireland,—to the Revenue and Colonial Police,—and, generally, to all bodies of men carrying percussion arms,—since the cleaning and management must follow the same course in all cases, whatever slight variance there may be in form and construction.

This little book is intended merely to assist in teaching a branch of duty, which it is most essential to the service should be executed by every individual in a perfect manner. And if I have omitted any thing in the details, or should my Suggestions be found incomplete, I shall be ready to attend to those of any officer or practical man who will favour me with their communications.
