HOW TO MAKE LAMP SHADES
ONCE you discover the ease with which you can make a new lamp shade, you will never again put up with one that is less than a real beauty spot,
or one out of harmony with either your room or your lamp base. For the time involved, there is no other type of home beauty treatment so rewarding—especially when evening comes and the lighted lamp glorifies your handiwork.
Fabric or Paper—Lamp shades can be made from all sorts of materials: canvas or burlap; chintz or cretonne; gingham or homespun; embroidered or upholstery fabrics; drapery stuffs; plaited organdie or chiffon; satin or crepe; taffeta; moire or ribbed silk; shantung; china silk or natural silk; slub
woven fabrics; fringe or open weaves.
Among the papers: Wrapping paper—treated or plain; butcher’s paper; parchment or vellum; wallpaper; metallic paper or foil; novelty book paper—particularly snowflake
paper; printed gift wrapping paper for seasonal shades—all are good.
Your room itself will help you in your choice. Informal fabrics and treatments go with informal rooms—game rooms, country house rooms, etc. Frilly, feminine fabrics belong in bedrooms. Rich, formal fabrics and treatments are usually confined to living rooms and dining rooms.
Color Hints—Because you can do all kinds of tricks with lamp shades, you must choose your color wisely. To point up accents and other decorations in the room, make gay matching shades. To increase the restful atmosphere of a room, make shades that blend right into the background: wallpaper shades against a wall covered in the same paper, or fabric or paper shades identical in tone with a plain or painted wall.
But whatever your color and fabric choice, make sure your lamp sheds a warm glow—both for the sake of its becomingness to you, and for the increased sense of rest it will give your room. White shades are hard on the eyes unless lined with a warm tint. Shades of yellow or rose are easier on the eyes than those of green or blue. If
