DREAMS
AND THEIR
INTERPRETATIONS.
ABLUTION. To dream of ablution, which means the washing of the body, is a good sign, and a gentle hint to either sex to wash well the body, or bathe more frequently, say once a week in winter, or twice a week in summer; for cleanliness is the goddess of health. A hint also to keep clean morally, for moral cleanliness is the promotor of goodness, virtue and happiness.
ACORN. To a lady or gent a speedy and happy marriage, giving promise of a son who will grow like the oak, in strength and beauty, and shine bright as a star of the first magnitude in the firmament of progress and reform. He will have no veneration for antiquated ideas. He will repudiate all undivine, mythical and speculative theology. He will ignore the religion of his forefathers, and disdain it as much as he would their ancient style of garments, or their worn out old clothes. The admiring eyes of millions will be upon him, and he will be regarded as a savior of his kind.
ACQUAINTANCE. Gives advice and says try and be more observing, educate your eyes more and you will find every day life full of interest; you will be happier, more sympathetic and more prosperous. All are creators of conditions. Each helps to make the world what it is. Show us a man who hasn’t at least one cranky idea, and we will show you a man that doesn’t amount to much.
ACTOR. For a lady to dream of an actor, tells her she is beloved by her lover, who will soon be dearer than her whole life.
ACTRESS. For a gent to dream of an actress gives promise of a proud, joyous, happy moment, in the first awakening of his heart to love and courtship, with a prospect of matrimony.
ADVERTISEMENT. Good news, a declaration of love, or friendship, and a hint to patronize those who advertise, hint also to advertise your own business, for advertising most generally produces results.
From north to south, from west to east,
Bright business men all know
That advertising is the yeast
That’s sure to raise the dough.
ADVICE. Advice, even good advice, is not worth much. It never takes the place of actual experience, and after all the only experience which is really worth anything is our own experience and as a general rule our experience is valuable only in proportion to its cost—not so much its cost in money, as its cost in effort and worry, and hardship and work. Good advice if acted upon, may however, reduce this cost, and it is with this hope that these hints and suggestions, throughout the book, are offered. Nevertheless, to the dreamer we would say, drink less, breathe more; eat less, chew more, clothe less, bathe more, worry less, work more, waste less, give more; write less, read more, preach less, practice more, hoard up less, give out more, work less, and rest more. But advice is about the only thing you can offer some people that they won’t take.
AFRICA. To dream you are in Africa means improved health and fortune and a hint to study more its history and people. It is remarkable but a fact that the children of the blackest Africans are born whitish. In a month they become pale yellow; in a year, brown; at four, dirty black; and at six or seven, glossy black.
AGATE. To dream of this precious gem means good health and long life, also gives invention, discovery, and intellectual development.
AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENT, is a hint to love the earth, and work in the ground, for from earth—from soil, air and water comes all we eat, drink and wear. Agriculture is king and queen of all employments.
AIR. Pure air suggests for you a sudden passion for one of the opposite sex, also a rapid gaining of knowledge, strength and courage, overcoming all obstacles to advancement. Bad air, sickness. A hint also to court fresh air all day and night. Pure air is to the lungs what wholesome food is to the stomach and dijestive organs. In a word pure air is the food and life of the soul, or spirit in man.
ALBUM. You will shortly see some one or their picture who has a longing wish for your loving affection.
ALE. Good health and immediate recovery from sickness, and a hint to the sick to employ it in preference to drugs. Good pure fresh ale is a delightful invigorating beverage. Food and medicine. Good for sick or well. But as good pure fresh ale is hard to get, and if you must have it, you will have to brew it yourself from barly malt and hops.
ALLIGATOR. A hint that some one is thinking to outrival you in the object of your affections. A hint also, that your business is in a dangerous situation, and without great care you will be forced to stop.
ALMA MATER. Ever desire to be useful and noble. Cultivate as much as possible a peaceful happy mind, and a kindly feeling for all mankind.
ALMANAC. A hint to study more the times and seasons, and especially the changes of the moon and its chemical effects upon our planet and people.
ALMSHOUSE. Bids you study more the law of economios, also to study frugality, so as to keep out of the almshouse.
ALTAR. To see an altar in your dream without candles or incense, grief or sadness; with candles, or incense, joy and gladness.
ALUM. You will shortly sour on some of your professional friends.
ALUMINUM. A delicious freedom in society is about to be afforded you.
AMETHYEST. Gives sobriety and antidote to enebriety.
AMERICA. If the scene of your dream is laid in America it tells you to attend strictly to your individual duties, to observe better the laws of health, of life and nature. A hint also, to study more its history, its politics, its institutions and people.
AMMUNITION. Always hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
Just keep the heart a-beatin, warm,
Be kind ter every feller;
Look out fer the rainbows in the storm.
But—carry yer umbreller.
Be brave ter battle with the strife,
Be true when people doubt you;
Don’t think that money’s all in life,
But—carry some about you!
An’ when it’s time ter shuffle off,
An’ you have done yer mission.
Jest put yer trust in Providence,
An’ call a good physician!
ANCHOR. Assurance in love, or riches, with soon a happy end to all sorrow.
ANGEL. To dream of an angel, gives increase of knowledge, faith and wisdom, with brilliant prospects for the future, A hint, also, that you must not allow your whole existence upon earth to be so largely occupied with earthly concerns, and with such small affairs, to the exclusion of more important matters, otherwise shades of regret will, in the evening of life, pass over your mind when you cannot repress the feeling that your life had been mispent and golden opportunities largely lost. Sweet, indeed, is the thought that the angels are near us, every where near us, for angels come to save.
ANGER. Don’t get angry, keep an even temper under all circumstances. Anger changes the secretions, deranges the circulation, and deteriorates the blood; wastes the nervous energy. Yes! anger, hatred, malice, or vindictiveness will positively tend to vitiate blood, brain and nervous system. Anger is brief madness. Cultivate more a love for the occult, also provide in spring and summer for the necessities of the fall and winter.
ANTELOPE. Success in trades and speculations with good luck in general.
ANVIL. To dream of an anvil gives promise of a long life of usefulness.
APPAREL. Good clean apparel means for the wearer, good clean character; ragged apparel, sickness; dirty apparel, a soiled character; black or red apparel, means that the wearer is hostile or unkind to you; but if white or blue, yellow, green or brown, know that their love or friendship for you is genuine.
APPARITION. If in white, joy or gladness; but if in black, grief or sadness.
APPLE. To dream of apples tells you that your loved one will prove to you true and constant. A hint
