    SESSION 1

    DISCIPLINES TO BE LEARNED

    TRAINING SESSION

Today’s lesson will examine the calling of the first Disciples of Jesus. When the twelve Disciples first chose to follow Jesus, they did not know the legacy they would leave here on earth.

What are disciples, and what are their responsibilities to Jesus and to humanity? Why did Jesus choose people to help Him carry out God’s plan of redemption? Why do people aspire to be disciples today? Anyone interested in Christianity might consider these questions. This lesson will help explore some answers to these questions.

    I. GOD SENT JESUS

God promised the Jews that a Messiah would be born among their people, and the Jews awaited His arrival. A virgin named Mary was chosen to give birth to God’s Son, Jesus. The prophet Isaiah had foretold that the Messiah would be born of a virgin: Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (Isa. 7:14, KJV). Still, most of the Jews did not recognize Jesus as the Savior. However, Jesus, at an early age, articulated His knowledge of God in the synagogues among the elders. And the religious leaders were impressed with His knowledge and insight.

Around the age of thirty, Jesus began His ministry with the act of baptism—a public declaration of one’s allegiance to God. Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist, baptized many people who had repented of their sins. John baptized the people with water, but he prophesied that the Messiah would ‘baptize [them] with the Holy Spirit and fire’ (Matt. 3:11, NRSV). Jesus requested that John the Baptist baptize Him, and when He did, John and the crowd saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him (v. 16, NRSV). In his amazement, John declared, ‘I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God’ (John 1:34, NRSV).

The Messiah for whom the Jews had been anxiously awaiting had arrived; however, not everyone believed He was the Christ. In fact, some Jews asked for a miraculous sign to prove that Jesus was the Son of God. But Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe’ (John 6:35-36, NRSV). God can prove His existence and power at any time, but He desires for His people to put their faith in Him willingly.

    II. JESUS CALLED HIS DISCIPLES

Jesus began His ministry and preached about the Kingdom of God. Jesus knew that His ministry would end with the sacrifice of His own life for the redemption of humanity. Thus Jesus chose twelve Disciples who would fulfill God’s plan of redeeming people after Jesus had returned to heaven.

Although the Jews would have expected the Messiah to utilize the religious leaders, Jesus chose ordinary, uneducated men to follow Him. He called several fishermen, including
