    SAVED BY GRACE

    EPHESIANS 2:1-10

    LESSON OBJECTIVES:

    • We were dead in trespasses and sins.

    • We are saved by God’s grace.

    • We are saved for God’s glory.

    TARGET OBJECTIVES:

    • Young Believers (ages 4-5): These children are learning that God has given them a wonderful gift.

    • Young Explorers (ages 6-8): These children are learning what it means to thank God and spend time in prayer with Him.

    • Trailblazers (ages 9-11): These children understand that they cannot earn salvation. It is a gift given to them by God.

    LESSON OVERVIEW

Most children have received gifts, and they understand the excitement or happiness involved in receiving gifts. Today they will be learning that God has given them the ultimate gift—the gift of salvation.

Because of God’s great love for people, He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to die on the cross. As a result of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, the gift of salvation is freely offered to all people. The only act people have to perform to receive salvation is to accept the gift that has been offered.

Before accepting the gift of salvation, all sinners are dead through the trespasses and sins (Eph. 2:1, NRSV). This refers to being spiritually dead, which may be too complex for young children to understand. Explain to the children that people are alive whether or not they are Christians. But inside they are dead in sin if they have not accepted the gift of salvation. Before believers become Christians, they follow the world and those who are disobedient. Explain that sinners live their lives based on what the world teaches is good and pleasurable. People who are not Christians are in bondage to Satan and the world.

Non-believers are spiritually dead, but they can be made alive in Christ. Paul writes, But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (vv. 4-5, NRSV). This is great news! Even though people were sinners and deserving of eternal punishment, God had mercy on them.

Some children might be familiar with John 3:16, which summarizes the Gospel message in its entirety. Read this verse out loud to the children and explain how this one verse can change the lives of any and all people.

    KEY VERSE:

But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4-5, NRSV)

God’s love and mercy is what compelled Him to send His only Son to die for the sins of the world and bring life to people who are dead in their sins!

Children are learning that they have been saved because of God’s grace. They cannot earn salvation, and even if they perform good works for the rest of their lives, they still cannot earn salvation. No one can. Salvation is an unearned gift from God.

Some people today believe that they can do enough good deeds to work their way to heaven. They believe that God does not eternally punish people who are essentially good. But all people are sinful. They are all deserving of eternal condemnation because of their sins. Only the grace of a merciful and loving God is able to spare them from what they truly deserve.

Even after believers accept God’s gift of salvation, there is work to do. Paul says, For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life (v. 10, NRSV). When God created the world, He created men and women for the specific purpose of having a relationship with them so that they could bring Him glory.

God extended His grace to people because He wanted to be glorified through their daily actions. Children can do this when they are working for His Kingdom and bringing glory to Him with their worship. Emphasize to your students the importance of their recognizing God’s grace. Without God’s grace, they would have no hope. God extends grace to sinners by giving them the opportunity to be saved.

Teaching Plan and Resources for YOUNG BELIEVERS

MATERIALS NEEDED: pictures of caterpillars, chrysalises, and butterflies; crayons; construction paper

    1. Bring pictures of caterpillars, chrysalises, and butterflies to class. Greet the students as they arrive. Open the class with the hymn We Give You Praise, and say a prayer. Read the key verse aloud, and read the lesson story.

    2. Show the class the pictures you brought. Explain to the students that the pictures represent before and after events. Compare the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly to the transformation that takes place when a person accepts Jesus and becomes a true believer.

    3. On a sheet of construction paper, ask the students to draw a picture of what
