    LEARNING SESSION

If you’ve gone to church for any time at all, then you’ve probably heard about faith. You may even know that faith is a big deal, but what is faith? What do Christians have faith in? What use is faith to Christians?

Perhaps, the most important element of Christianity is faith. Our relationship with Christ begins with the belief that He not only exists, but that He is the Son of God. The theme for this quarter is Understanding Your Faith. This week we will start the journey by exploring what faith is. In weeks to come, our understanding of faith will grow and hopefully so will our faith.

    I. The Way to Restoration

What is restoration, and why do people need it? To restore something is to make it like new again. Imagine that there is a very old house in your neighborhood with boards in place of windows, peeling paint, and maybe even holes in the roof like a haunted house. If that house were restored, it would look brand new—new paint, new windows and doors, no holes in the roof. Not only would it look brand new, but things in it would also work like new. The water would run hot and cold, the electricity would work in every room, and air conditioning and heating would keep the house comfortable. What was broken was restored so that it is whole again.

Because of sin in our lives, our relationship with God is like that broken-down house. It needs to be restored. Only faith in Jesus can take our broken-down relationship and make it a restored relationship.

Our faith itself does not fix us. If we have faith that a bunch of aliens will come and deliver us from evil, that is not saving faith. Saving faith is found in Jesus because He alone is worthy to be trusted and believed. He does not lie. Faith in any person, place, thing, or idea besides Jesus cannot restore our relationship with God.

II. The Conviction That Jesus Is Victorious

Faith in Jesus makes our relationship with God like new. What do we need to believe about Jesus? We need to believe that Jesus is victorious. He defeated the power of sin and death. He did this so that we could be victorious over sin and not fear death. If Jesus did not have victory over sin and death, we would have no hope. But because He did win over sin and death, we have hope for the future.

How did Jesus defeat sin and death? He did not do it in a way that seemed like He was winning. Jesus was convicted at an illegal trial and sentenced to death even though Pilate did not see any reason why He should have died. He was beaten and mocked, and after all of that He was crucified. Jesus defeated sin and death by dying! His victory would not have been complete if He was not raised from the dead too. By dying and then living again, Jesus won. Instead of simply forcing people to acknowledge His reign or to obey Him, Jesus became the ultimate example of sacrificial love and showed how God defeats
