About this ebook

This guide reaffirms the mandate of the Church in regard to missions. That mandate given by our Lord has not changed in more than two thousand years of existence. People are still lost and need a Savior. People are still homeless and need shelter. People are still destitute and need clothing and food. The challenge of missions is for God’s people to meet the pressing needs of the destitute and oppressed. This guide challenges women to go beyond study and discussion and into action.

    MISSION EDUCATION—WHAT IS IT?

    THE MANDATE

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age (Matt. 28:19-20, RSV).

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the sabbath day. And he stood up to read; and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written,

"The Spirit of the Lord is

    upon me,

    because he has anointed

    me to preach good

    news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim

    release to the captives

    and recovering of

    sight to the blind,

to set at liberty those who

    are oppressed,

    to proclaim the acceptable

    year of the Lord."

And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing (Luke 4:16-21, RSV).

Jesus’ commission to the whole body of believers (and His own identification of His mission as He accepted His responsibility) became the foundation for a commitment on the part of each believing Christian to continue God’s mission in the world today! The whole body of the Church of Jesus Christ is included in the mission. This means that all of us in the Church—children, youth, men, and women—have a responsibility to share the Good News of God’s love with one another and with the whole world in all the ways that are open to us.

    THE GOALS

The goal of Mission Education is to help each of us in the Church family develop a Christlike concern for everyone in the world. Then we can respond in faith and love to God through Jesus Christ by fulfilling our discipleship in the Christian mission. As Christians, we should understand Christ’s mission as it applies both to us and the whole world, and we should be actively involved in that mission.

An effective program of mission education will do the following:

    1.  Increase awareness of the world mission of the Church and lead participants beyond an interest in one area or kind of work to an awareness of world mission strategy.

    2.  Help people learn about Baptist mission projects. The program elements should result in the following:

    • a knowledge about Baptist mission both in the United States and overseas.

    • an understanding of the contemporary scene and its rapid changes and the implications of these for Christian mission.

    • an understanding of the role of missionaries in today’s changing world.

    • opportunities for interpreting the work of Baptist churches—national, international, and educational ministries—as they attempt to do what the local church cannot do by itself.

    • opportunities to respond to vocational commitment to missionary service.

    • development and implementation of community mission concerns with other churches.

    • interpreting Baptist mission concerns through church bulletins, newsletters, etc.

    3.  Help people become involved in missions by:

    • preparing church members for a global mission endeavor in which all churches may both send and receive people as missionaries.

    • preparing members of the church for dialogue with members of other faiths.

    • helping members understand that their level of interest is reflected in their stewardship.
