Helen Maria Hunt Jackson, was born Helen Fiske on October 15, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts

She is most famously known for her novel Ramona, about the mistreatment of Native Americans in Southern California. Reprinted hundreds of times it is often cited as one of the most ethical novels ever written.

Helen’s mother died when she was fifteen and her father when she was eighteen.

Her education had been provided for and she attended Ipswich Female Seminary and the Abbott Institute. She was a classmate of the poet Emily Dickinson, also from Amherst. The two became friends and corresponded for the rest of their lives.

We publish here most of her poetic output.  Her series ‘A Calendar Of Sonnets’ took the months in turn and gave a crisp and vivid description of each.

Although a novelist and poet the major theme of Helen’s life was that of an activist on behalf of Native Americans.

Her last letter was written to President Grover Cleveland and said: From my death bed I send you message of heartfelt thanks for what you have already done for the Indians. I ask you to read my Century of Dishonor. I am dying happier for the belief I have that it is your hand that is destined to strike the first steady blow toward lifting this burden of infamy from our country and righting the wrongs of the Indian race.

Jackson died of stomach cancer in on August 12th 1885 in San Francisco, California.
