- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a look at the life of a service dog. What I really like is that this pup is in service to a vet for PTSD. It covers some of the typical things other service dog books do, as well as looking specifically at veterans. A wonderful and educational story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is a beautifully done (and badly needed) children's
book about the day of a disabled vet and his golden retriever service dog -- from the viewpoint of the dog. Tuesday goes everywhere with Luis (even the bathroom stall which has a picture of Tuesday under the stall door that children will love).
Some of the words and concepts will need explanation for the very young, but nothing is said in a scary way. This simply describes how soldiers can still hurt, have nightmares and flashbacks, and need the support of a trained dog. The love and caring between the two are so very clear thru words and photos.
This book is wonderful. For those who aren't already personally involved, can't think of a better introduction to the notions that military service often extends beyond discharge and the wonderful interaction between a person in need and his canine therapy. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Tuesday is a dog that helps a soldier. He goes with him everywhere, even on the subway. He does this because the soldier was wounded in Iraq and also suffers from PTSD.I could not recommend a better book to teach children about service animals and why they are needed. I could also not recommend a better book about soldiers who have returned from conflicts overseas and what they faced while they were away. I simply can't imagine that there is a book out there that could cover these topics the way Montalván does. He is a master of words and the photographer, Dan Dion, has perfectly captured the emotion of this story in his images. Together, these two have created a picture book for young children that perfectly depicts the life of a wounded soldier and his service dog in a way that children can understand and relate to. I was specifically touched to see the reactions of my preschool class when we read about the author's "daytime nightmares" that make him nervous about going out with a lot of noises or people around him. This was something they completely understood and it opened up a wonderful grab bag of conversations on the topics that soldiers face today, but on a child's level of thinking and understanding. When I read this book I immediately started passing it around to every family I knew. It is the perfect teaching tool, but it is also a touching story. Every time I read it to my preschool class they are captivated. I don't often recommend a child's picture book for an adult's library, but I feel that this is the perfect companion to the adult's version of the same story, also written by Montalván, called Until Tuesday. I beg everyone who sees this review to find a copy of this book and share it with every child they can. Read Until Tuesday for yourself and share the experience of Tuesday Tucks Me In with your child, your grandchild, your niece and nephew, or anyone who will listen. This is a story that must be told and retold, it is a story you will never be able to forget. This book that will touch your heart and open your mind, perfectly written in every way.
