About this ebook

It's a child's first day of kindergarten, but who is worried about all the new people and the different things he'll meet--the child? No! The mother. In a refreshing reversal of roles, the child takes it upon himself to comfort and reassure his mother that everything will be fine, she'll get used to him going to big-kid school, and yes, he is ready for the first day of kindergarten. Utterly charming in its simplicity, Yum playfully uses size and color to reveal emotions of this milestone beginning.

A little boy is so excited to start school, his mother however, is nervous for her son. She worries her son will not have enough time to eat lunch, that he does not have all of his supplies, and that he is too small for the big school, but he does not worry about those things. He rushes his mother to school, but when they get there he becomes nervous and his mother becomes excited for him. After meeting his teacher, he becomes excited again and his mother is sad she has to leave her son. He loves kindergarten and makes new friends. At the end of the day, his mother is there anxiously to pick him up and hear all about his day. This book is a great first day of Kindergarten book. It shows that everyone gets nervous, including parents.

In my opinion, this book was really enjoyable for many reasons. One of my favorite parts of the book was the use of illustrations. The way the illustrator showed emotion affected how the reader understood how the characters were feeling. When the mother was nervous for her son, she was shown as small and blue. Towards the end of the book the son was shown as small and blue in order to display that he wasn’t nervous throughout the book until he got to his classroom. Another reason is how the story is very believable and real. Parents do get very anxious for their kids, but when the child gets scared, that parent knows to step up and show that it’s going to be okay. The overall message of this book was to display the relationship between parents and their children and to learn to “let go.”

Story of a boy heading off to kindergarten, it shows how the mom is nervous and the boy supports her, then it shows the boy being nervous and the mom supporting him, then switches again.

I really enjoyed this picture book. My favorite part of the book was the illustrations because they added so much to the story. For example, in the beginning of the story when the mother was worried and nervous about her son's first day of kindergarten, she was drawn blue and much smaller than the child. However, as the child begins to feel nervous and uneasy and the mom gains confidence, she is drawn much larger than the child. I love the way that the thoughtful illustrations enhance the meaning of the story and make it so much more interesting. The reversal of roles throughout the story is very interesting as well. The content of the story is also very relatable and is easy for children and parents to relate to. The big idea of this story could be that parents and children can be nervous before a big change, but they get through it together!

I really liked this book and thought it was an adorable twist on the first day of school. In this book the little boy is excited to go to school and the mom is scared and nervous. I like this book because even though the mom is scared, it gives a positive out look on the first day of school and can make children excited. It kind of reminds me of reverse psychology. The language and writing in the book is clear, organized, and paced well. The characters are believable and realistic. I really enjoyed the plot of the story. The boy starts off excited and the mom is nervous, then the boy gets nervous, and then they both end up happy and positive. I believe the illustrations are successful and contribute to the story in a positive way. Whenever the character is nervous or scared they are a shade of blue and whenever a character is excited and confident they are full of bright colors. This helps the reader understand the story better. "Did I pack all your school supplies? What if I forgot something? She worries and worries." "Mom, I have my crayons and markers and everything. I'm all set!" This is an example in the book when the mom is worried and the little boy is excited. I believe this book is adorable and can help a student feel confident for the first day of school.

I loved this first day of kindergarten book. The mother in the story is reluctant and feeling very blue (literally) about the first day of school. It took me a minute to figure out that the mother was not a doll, but an emotional representation. I liked that other cultures were represented in the children at school and that in the end, the child really needed his mother more than she needed him. Would I read it on the first day of school to my kinder class and their parents? Not unless I wanted all the mothers in tears.

This book is about a five year old boy going into kindergarten. He is thrilled that it is his first day of school, but his mom is extremely worried and anxious. The mom's character is small and colored with blue hues and the boy is large and colored with warm hues. The mom questions everything and the boy continues to say he will be fine and that she shouldn't worry. When they arrive at his classroom the characters switch emotions and the little boy becomes worried while the mom is confident. They hug goodbye and boy returns to his excited self, while his mom leaves feeling anxious again.

This story gives a different perspective on the first day of Kindergarten. The main message of this story is to show readers that the new Kindergartener is not the only one that is timid and nervous for their first day of school. The roles have switched in the story. When the child is getting ready for their first day of school, his mother is much smaller than him in the illustrations and very worried. The young boy has to drag his mother to the classroom. I love this portrayal of imagery because the parents are just as nervous as their children for the first day of school. The mother in this story stayed small until it was her time to be brave. In the Kindergarten class the young boy was now the small one and the Mother grew to be larger. The symbolization is a great way to explain feelings and confidence. As the boy played and warmed up with other children in his classroom he grew back to his normal size, because his confidence was growing as the day went on. The Mother and son both faced times of difficulty but they got their courage up and helped the other out when the other was small. Everything in this book was very accurate to the first day jitters for any grade. I know I still get nervous, and feel small, on the first day of classes but after a few moments in that class my confidence grows and I feel back to myself again.

Mom, it's my first day of kindergarten is a picture book about a child's first day of Kindergarten. The books shows the anticipation and anxieties of a child's first day at school. It's general theme is growing up. I enjoyed this book. One thing that I liked about this book was that the "normal" child anxieties and mothers' reassurances were switched. In this book, the child was very excited for school and was confident that he was ready, while the mother was worried about how her child would handle it. I thought this was a fresh perspective on this type of story. A second thing that I liked about this book was the illustrations. I liked how when a character was worried about something he or she appeared smaller and was a darker color, and when he or she was happy or excited he or she appeared larger and was a lighter color. For example, when the mother was worried that her son was too small to attend school she was depicted as small and dark blue, and when the boy was sure that he was a "big boy" and ready for school he was depicted as large and lightly colored.

I thought this was a really cute book for younger children. The illustrations perfectly displayed the emotions the characters were going through. It poses a great discussion question of why the child was so big and the mom was so small, or why the child was yellow and then turned blue. When the characters were blue and small, they were worried, scared, and perhaps upset. When the characters were very large and had more yellow tones, they were excited and happy. Children will see a deeper connection between illustrations and written words. I also liked that the writing was short and clear. There were no hard words, so an emerging reader could use this resource. The characters were also very believable, despite their exaggerated illustrations. The mother was worried like many parents usually are. The child went from excited to nervous and then back to happy, showing the different adjustment stages of going to school on the first day. The purpose of this book is to understand the emotions of a parent and child on their first day of school and that school can be very fun. Children sometimes have negative views of school but the main character in this book was very excited about school and had a lot of fun on his first day. Overall, I think this is a great book to be used for teaching context clues with the illustrations or teaching emotions.

I did this for one of my assignments, I can't remember which one. I really liked how the illustrations captured the boy being big and happy and popping off the page, while the Mom was kind of in the background, smaller, sad and feeling like she was loosing a piece of herself. I like this geek because I see this every September when parents come to school to drop off their little ones for their first day of school. Sometimes the kids are very scared, but usually the parents are more devastated than the children are. The parents put on a face and then when the door closes they begin to meltdown all the way back to their car. I feel for them but we all know it is for the best. I enjoyed reading this book because it really touched me.

I really like the story and pictures. I find the illustration really cute and adorable. I also find the darker shading of the mother who was worried about her kid going to school really effective since everyone else were bright and colorful.

I think that this is a great book. I feel that the illustrations greatly enhanced the story. When a character feels scared or nervous, he or she is small and blue, but when the character feels confident and happy, he or she is big and yellow. This helps the reader to understand how the characters are feeling. I also enjoyed the plot of the story because I could relate to it. The story follows the main character on his first day of school, I remember how nervous I felt the morning of my first day of school. I also remember how much better I felt once I met my teacher and made some friends. The author captures these feelings and memories well. The message of this story is to be brave and confident in order to overcome your fears.

I enjoyed this book because the illustrations greatly impacted the story. The extra textual features helped carry the message of the story. I think it would be easy for a child to look through this book and understand the story without actually reading the words. The size and colors of the boy and the mom showed their emotions. It was evident what the character was feeling inside based on the color their skin turned and how large or small they got. The characters became multidimensional and complex because their words may have said a simple statement but the reader could visually see exactly how that character was feeling. Another reason this book is a good choice is that the characters are relatable. Stories about kindergarten often feature a scared and nervous child, but it was refreshing to see the story flipped around so that the child was confident and the mother was anxious. The story showed real human emotions and could cause many different types of readers to connect with the story. Parents and children alike could find a connection to the story, which makes it a worthwhile read. The central idea of this story is that parents can be vulnerable as well as children. Yum shows a parental figure in a view that sharply contrasts the typical perspective. While mothers are often portrayed as superheroes and fearless women, it is sometimes a reverse situation where they are just as afraid as a child going to school for the first time.

I liked this book because it was illustrated very well and the meaning behind it was very strong. The illustrations really helped convey the meaning in the story, and without them the book wouldn't have been as good. For example, the illustrator made the child large and colorful when he was feeling confident and happy, and made him small and a gray-blue when he was scared and nervous. The author uses art to convey meaning and to help the reader understand the story. I also liked the main idea behind the book and how realistic it was. It shows mother being afraid at first and the child being excited about school, and then the roles are reversed. This happens in everyday life with parents and children, and I really like how the author was able to have the reader relate to the story. The big idea in this book was to allow your children to grow and explore and help them build confidence.

I loved the illustrations in this book. The mother and child grow or shrink and change colors depending on how they are feeling. It is a great way to introduce some basic concepts to children. The story is good. The words are for intermediate beginning readers, I think. There aren't many repeated words and some of them are harder to sound out. But it isn't hard. I would recommend this for advanced readers in K and everyone in 1st and beyond.

I thought this was a great children's story with a funny twist. Usually it's both the parent and child who are nervous about the first day of kindergarten, but in this book it's the kids who is anxious to get going and the mom who is not quite so ready for this to happen. Then, after the reality sets in, the kid starts to get nervous and the mom has to calm him down. In the end it works out for eveyone and he is excited to be going to kindergarten.

I truly enjoyed the book Mom, it’s My First Day of Kindergarten written by Hyewon Yum for numerous reasons. First, the utilization of illustrations engaged the reader by allowing him/her to understand the feelings portrayed by the characters through the use of colors and size. For example, in the beginning of the book the mother shows feelings of apprehension and anxiety, the illustrations display her in hues of blues and very small in proportion to the son. The boy however, is excited and thrilled to be going to school, the illustrations display him in bright yellows and reds and very gigantic in size, dragging his mother behind him to school. Secondly, the author uses a first person point of view making the story feel more personal. For example, “Will you be okay in the big kids’ school? You’re so little.” Says the mom. The boy simply replies “Mom, don’t worry. I’ll be fine, I’m already five!” This permitted me; as the reader; to reminiscence over a similar experience when I was a child. This moment in the story would also evoke the feelings that parents had when they first sent their own son/daughter off to school for the first time. Towards the conclusion of the book the child becomes nervous and scared, being represented in colors of blue, whereas the mother becomes vibrant, represented by the colors of red and yellow, reassuring and comforting her son telling him that he will have a great first day. This book demonstrates the countless number of emotions a child and parent will experience, in relation to the roller coaster of feelings brought on by the first day of school. I would personally read this book to my future students to show them that while the first day of school can be a scary thought you always have people in your life to help you through these fears.

I liked this book for many reasons. First, this children’s book has very strong illustrations. These illustrations enhance the story and bring emotion to the text. In the story, the mother is extremely nervous for her son to go to Kindergarten, however the boy is excited and reassures his mother that he will be okay. The illustrator drew the mother very small and blue to resemble her anxiousness while the boy is big and red because of his bravery. Another feature that I liked is the character portrayal. The mother and son in this story are very believable and realistic. The dialogue throughout the story helps develop the characters. It is clear that the mother is uneasy about her son going to school when she says “Oh dear look at the time, you’ll be late for school” and her son replies with encouragement “Don’t worry mom. We can run!” The main message of this story is to enlighten readers that sometimes children are not the only ones who are nervous to begin school. Parents also have a hard time letting go of their children and this story represents these emotions very effectively.

“Mom, it’s My First Day of Kindergarten” by Hyewon Yum is a wonderful and helpful book to both children and their parents. The illustrations capture the up and down emotions of both the mother and son as they prepare for the first day of school; the blue hues represent fear and worry while the warm colors signify confidence and excitement. Even the size of the characters was distorted to highlight the feelings of the characters: the smaller they were drawn, the more afraid they felt. Without the interpretive pictures to accompany them, the words of the story would read very differently, and likely would not carry as much meaning.I also appreciated how the language of the story was filled with dialogue. This helped bring the characters and situation to life, because I could “hear” the young boy yelling to his mother to hurry up, and his mother’s worry as she wondered aloud if he would have enough to eat or make any new friends. The main message of this story was that both a child and the parent will experience highs and lows, excitement and worry upon starting school; this is normal, and no emotion lasts forever!

I enjoyed this book because it used the illustration to convey meaning and created believable characters. The first thing you notice about the pages of this book is the use of color. There is a large use of the colors blue and red to symbolize feeling scared and excited. For example, when the young boy was excited and ready for his first day he was the largest aspect of the illustration as well as his skin was tinted red, while his mother who was nervous that all of this supplies were packed was extremely small in comparison to the young boy and tinted a deep blue. This use of color helped to guide a reader’s emotions as they read the story and helped to easily convey the author’s main message. On top of the creative illustration, the author managed to create realistic characters such as the nervous mother and the rambunctious kindergartner. By flipping the basic roles of a nervous student and confident parent the author makes the characters much more believable. Both of these aspects helped to creative an engaging and exciting story for any child. The author was also able to easily communicate their main message, that everyone gets nervous and needs reassurance. That it is not only the child who needs a confidence boast, sometimes they may need to help assure their parent.

I really liked this book for several reasons. I felt that the author did a wonderful job encompassing the “first day of school” experience, for both the parent(s) and the child. The language used was both concise and clear. The dialogue between the mother and son were appropriate and relatable, because the reader might be able to imagine him or herself having similar conversations. Also, there were not any difficult or extremely challenging words that would hinder a young reader from reading this book. I loved how the characters were portrayed in this book, especially their illustrations. The characters were well developed and encompassed characteristics pertinent to both parents and children. The mother was shown worrying and demonstrated how anxious and nervous she was for her son to go to school. I felt like this was extremely applicable because parents always worry about their kids—no matter their age. The little boy went on a rollercoaster of feelings, which realistically depicted the different emotions a child may experience on their first day of school. The illustrations in this book were key, in terms of emphasizing the message. I feel that they connect very well with the words and emphasize the feelings. In the beginning of the story the mother was drawn much smaller then the boy, she almost looked as if she were his younger sister. Through the text, the reader can understand that she is the mother. She is colored with shades of blue, which elucidate the mother’s worry and anxiety. The boy is colored very vibrantly, in shades of yellow, representing his happiness and excitement. Interestingly, this was swapped upon arrival to the school. The mother is drawn appropriately sized and colorful, with hues of yellow; the boy appears smaller, but is colored in blue. The coloring encompasses each characters changing emotion throughout the book. The boy feels excited, nervous, and happy, all of which are expected on such a big day. The big idea of this book is to demonstrate the various emotions a child and parent(s) will experience, in relation to the first day of school.

I liked this book for its creative use of illustrations and its choice in characters. Starting with the illustrations, the illustrator’s choice to draw the main character, who is a child, much larger as the book goes on pairs very well with the idea that the main charter is becoming increasingly more confident about going to his first day of school. This also was a great way to visually depict the main character’s growing excitement for his first day of kindergarten. In comparison, by drawing the mother, who had doubts and fears about the main character’s first day of kindergarten, small showed that although that fear will be present, it is just a small part of such an exciting day and by the end of the book, even the mother was depicted much larger, which visually showed that the fear about the first day of kindergarten was gone. Moving on to the choice in character, by utilizing a mother and son, the book relates closely with its targeted audience of preschool-kindergarten aged children. Also, by choosing to make the mother the worried character and the son the excited character, it helps put the target audience in the son’s shoes and is better apt in removing any fear about them going to their first day of kindergarten. Overall, the big idea of this book is that there is a lot of excitement about going to your first day of kindergarten and although you might be afraid, it can also be an exciting and very fun time, which the book heavily emphasizes on the latter.

I really liked this book. I could relate to the characters in the story as the student starting school and as a parent sending their child off to school for the first time. I also liked the illustrations and colors that were used to depict the emotions that each of the characters was feeling at different times during the story. As a parent, I remember feeling the way the mom did in this story. The mom worried that her son would be late, wouldn’t have time to eat, that she would forget his supplies, and he wouldn’t have any friends. As a parent it’s really hard to send our baby (as we as parents see him) into this big unfamiliar place. In the end we find that they are more prepared and ready then we could have imagined. To convey emotions the author used different colors. The story began with the little boy waking up his mom. His face was big and bright pink while mom’s face is blue as she hides under the cover. The pink shows how excited the son was about his first day of kindergarten and the blue that was used for mom’s face expresses worry. I feel the message that the author was trying to convey is that the first day of school is not only a roller coaster of emotions and mixed feeling on the part of the child but also for the parent.

This book would be classified as contemporary realistic fiction. In my opinion, this was a great book. The illustrations in this particular book made the book above and beyond other children’s books I have read. The author made the child and the mother different colors depending on how they were feeling. When the child or mother felt confident and happy, they were blue. When the child or mother felt sad or worried, they were yellow. This really enhanced the story because you knew what emotions the author was trying to evoke, which can be difficult for younger children to figure out at first. I also enjoyed the dialogue between the mother and child. Dialogue was included throughout the entire book, which made the book seem more realistic and easier for children to relate to. When children relate to books, they understand the bigger picture easier because they can put themselves in the characters shoes. The dialogue helped show the relationship between the mother and child and made it easier to understand that the mother was worried about her small son entering a bigger school for the first time. The big idea of this story was to show that parents worry too even though their children might think they’re too grown for their mothers to worry. When the little boy started feeling small again, his mother was the tall one who picked him back up. It teaches children that their mothers will be there when they need them and shows the parent and child bond in a clear picture.
