Nurses walked up and down the narrow labour ward of Calabar Teaching Hospital, as hour after hour the beds filled up. A woman who’d gone in for a Caesar stayed in the theatre longer than necessary and a doctor hurriedly discharged another to make room for her. The post-natal ward was filled, as well as the amenity ward.

Being an old timer in this business of having a baby, I remained generally ignored as pang after pang of labour pains seized my slight frame. My stomach had grown so big at first, I thought I would have twins, but the doctor had thankfully deflated that horrible thought by facts from my scan result. How could I possibly cope with two babies, considering…

Another horrifying pang of pain seized me and I let out a screech I had held back with success. With my experience, a woman in labour breathed, not screech but experience sometimes meant nothing.

Doctor, doctor please. Ohhhh! Baby is coming. Baby is coming.

I didn’t know I could project so well. A nurse paused in her hurry and turned to me. She said something I didn’t hear and hurried off.

Please, don’t leave me. I burst into tears. The pains subsided and as I took in a deep breath, another came, wave after wave of indescribable pain.

Two attendants came and helped me to the delivery room, thank God, a bed just got vacated. A wearied doctor bent over me as the last pain reduced and another started. Help me, please.

He wasn’t kind or gentle. He prodded me with fat, long, fingers, through the pain. Hot tears sprang to my eyes. Please, I moaned through the tears.

The doctor mumbled something to the midwife beside him, and she nodded, and ran off to do his bidding.

Just then, a loud noise came in through the delivery room door. Several nurses ran helter-skelter for a while. I couldn’t see what the trouble could be through the blinding pain I was in. The midwife didn’t come back, and the doctor cursed as I screamed again. He bent over me for a moment, and then walked away.

For the first time since I arrived the labour ward almost five hours earlier, I thought I would die here, such was the pain.

The doctor and the midwife did not show up. They never did. I don’t know what happened to me after that. Because I passed out on the delivery bed.

When I came to, a nurse explained to me: my baby did not make it. My cervix refused to open up. And the vacuum extractor, the equipment the doctor had requested for the midwife to bring … better left unsaid!

Because of the terrible neglect and guilt felt by the overwhelmed doctor, they allowed me to have the bed. But for just another night. The kind nurse educated me on what next to do with myself; to rest, do my hot water therapies so
