    Reclining cozily on the broken-in couch, Jaime flipped through the new Glamour magazine while her mother badgered her on the phone. Yes, Mom, practice was fine. No, the boys didn't grope me. A creak sounded from the front porch, followed by knocking. Jaime checked that her freshly painted nails were dry and got up. Hey, I've got to go. Fine, I'll use extra soap. Bye!

    She opened the door. The girl in the dull gray hoodie headed for the fridge with loud footsteps, but Jaime beat her to it. So what will it be today? Leftover fried chicken, pizza, or cheese sticks?

    How about all of the above? Danielle asked.

    No, my dad will be pissed! Besides, I really think you should start getting your weight under control. It isn't healthy.

    "I'm not healthy? But aren't I the starting center for our championship winning football team? Besides, I only weigh around one twenty."

    What, kilos?

    Danielle laughed. Yes, kilos. Hey, don't forget I can outlift everyone in school, male or female.

    Despite the five hundred-plus pound squat and deadlift Danielle was so proud of, Jaime worried about her friend. A junior in high school shouldn't weigh that much no matter how strong she was, and she only continued to grow bigger.

    You know guys will never like you like this, don't you?

    I don't need any guy right now. When I'm famous, it'll be them who come running to me.

    Jaime wanted to keep arguing the point, but right now the open fridge was making her back cold. All right, pick two. I've got to leave something for my dad.

    I'll have pizza and fried chicken, then.

    They returned to the living room, where Danielle went right to work on the cold chicken. Jaime ate pizza fast as she could, hoping to spare her friend some excess calories. Not that they'd do her modeling career much good, but she trusted she could burn them off.
