About this ebook

Conflicts are a part of life. Strong conflicts become battles. Conflicts and battles in our lives may not be spiritual warfare. There are six main areas of your life where you may have battles and conflict, but they are not spiritual warfare. These require a different strategy. So before engaging in spiritual warfare, one must look at these areas to see if they are the root of conflict. It is tempting to find something to blame for our struggles. We must be careful to not give too much credit to Satan for our troubles, thus holding ourselves back from personal victories in conflict resolution with God's guidance. Not all battles are spiritual warfare. After determining the conflict or battle is being waged by Satan and his evil doers, then you are ready to begin spiritual warfare. The enemy's plan is to hinder our growth and effectiveness in the battle for souls. The better we understand the source of the fight, the more capably we can partner with God to defeat the enemy. Spiritual warfare is a battle of who has authority in and over our lives. The warfare is whatever is keeping you from being all you should be as a person and hindering the effectiveness of your work. We are never in the battle alone.

Now he has learned that there is hope to renew our brains and grow into the persons we are meant to be despite our past. Thanks to the grace of God Jan Coverstone is breaking free from the strongholds placed on him by others that he has battled for a lifetime. Introduction

Much has been written and practiced about spiritual warfare. Some of these writings are very good, some border on the mystical, and some are bizarre. So why am I writing another book on a subject that has been around since Paul wrote his epistles? The Lord has opened my eyes to the spiritual realm and the battles that take place. Most people do not even think about the spiritual realm nor do they have a clue what goes on around us. I am led to share what I have learned. If chasing demons doesn’t appeal to you, I agree with your feelings. However, regardless of what we feel and think about spiritual warfare, it is a part of our lives. Our knowledge of that warfare and the strategies involved will determine in many ways the outcome of our eternity as well as our journey through this temporary time we refer to as life.

I would like to share some practical aspects and give an understanding of spiritual warfare in order to strengthen the body of Christ. All our lives are affected by the battles in and of the spirit realm. When we learn the basics of operation, we have a greater chance of being less affected by the battles and not having our lives thrown into turmoil. Our adversary, the devil, and his henchmen will not stop. They prey on Christians who do not believe they will be affected by his strategies. Everyone who accepts Christ will experience warfare. We must know what the battles are, what sin is, and what constitutes the ups and downs of life.

Section 1: These Are Not Spiritual Warfare

To understand spiritual warfare we should know what it is not; because, if it is not warfare, the strategy to overcome the trials and circumstances is entirely different. We will not gain victory in an area by coming against the devil when he was never a part of the situation. We may feel we are failing to grow into the person we envision ourselves to be or that aspects of our life are not right. The root cause may not have anything to do with spiritual warfare.

The next few chapters will cover topics which may be causing a lack of blessing in our lives. The content of these chapters will clarify the struggles which seem like spiritual warfare and negatively affect our lives. These areas rob our lives of peace and bring torment. There will only be victory when the subjects in this section are recognized and come under the Grace of God.

    1: Offenses

I have offended people. I have been offended by people. Offenses are a part of life. I do not like to offend others but, hard as I try, sometimes it happens. At times offense occurs because of actions and other times offense occurs because of attitudes. I can correct my actions; however, I cannot correct another’s attitude.

Different words are used in the New Testament for offense. All are translated offense but they have different shades of meaning. We might miss the mark and offend someone; that is the meaning from the word hamartia. Paraptoma has the connotation that we could have a lapse in judgment or unintentional error. Proskope means we might stumble and through our mistake someone is offended. Another idea comes from the Greek word skandalon which is the basis for our word scandal.

To put this into today’s language an offense is an annoyance or resentment brought about by a perceived insult or disregard for oneself or one’s standard or principles. It is something which causes a person to be hurt, angry or upset. It is easy to see by and through these definitions we have offended others and have been offended by the actions or words of others. Offenses are going to occur in our lives.

What do we do when we are offended? Do we retaliate in anger over a perceived injustice or hurt caused by someone? Do we let it simmer inside us and then take it out on someone else later in the day? Our response is usually determined by the severity and hurt of the offense. If someone runs through a four way stop, because you are stopping and they think they can beat you through the intersection, it may offend us for a moment. We may think
