    Introduction

    THE STORY OF YOUR LIFE

    You are here.

Just three words, but in the right context, these three words can be a real lifesaver.

You are here. Tomorrow is somewhere off in the distance. You are here. Yesterday and every day before that can only be glimpsed by glancing over your shoulder, into the past. But in this very moment of your life, You are here.

One place I love to see these three little words is at the shopping mall. Now, I like going to the mall about as much as I like getting a root canal. But much like a trip to the dentist, sometimes it’s just something you gotta do. On those rare days (Mother’s Day, birthdays, and Christmas!) when a visit to the mall can’t be avoided, it’s best to have a plan of attack.

Get in, get out, nobody gets hurt. That’s my motto.

To do this, I immediately locate the nearest mall directory, one of those big maps listing all the shops and restaurants which are placed in strategic locations around the mall. Once I’m standing in front of the mall directory, I immediately search for those three all-important words: You are here. They’re usually surrounded by a big red dot, signifying the exact spot where I’m standing. I am convinced that the big red dot and those three words are there for guys like me. Taking a moment to pause by the big red dot allows me a chance to look behind me and see the direction I’ve come from. I can remember the course that led me this far. This way I’ll know how to leave the mall and waste no extra time trying to find my car.

Then, once I know where I am, I can make sure that no time from here on out is wasted. Sure, it might seem quicker to just take off in a mad dash through the mall, but I’ve learned that one mustn’t rush into these things. It’s a madhouse out there. By stopping at the map, I am able to get the lay of the land and make a plan. Instead of simply wandering aimlessly around this jungle of junk, I can be sure to hit only the stores that I need to visit, and maybe stop for a cookie in the food court.

Remember my motto: Get in, get out, nobody gets hurt.

Taking a You are here moment provides the clarity and renewed sense of direction to help me move forward with confidence. And if something should distract me along the way, something like the smell of a fresh-baked cookie in the food court…well, I’ve already stopped at the big red dot once, and I know that in an emergency I can return to it and get back on track.

Do you ever feel like your life could use a You are here moment? A moment of clarity and reorientation? Perhaps you’ve been so caught up in the doing of life that you feel like you’re losing track of what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Do you sometimes feel as though you are wandering aimlessly through life with no real direction, uncertain if you even want to go where you seem to be heading? We can get so caught up in the chaos of just living that we never stop long enough to decide if we really are content with where our story is heading. Like all stories, yours has a beginning, a middle, an end. Every day the story of your life is being written. Every second is a word, every moment a sentence, every day another page.

For a songwriter like me, it’s all about the story. And up until recently, it was all about my story. My songs have been written out of my personal experience, songs that captured what I had lived and thought and felt and believed. But when it came time to write the songs for my new album I decided to take a different approach. Instead of writing out of my own life, I wanted to compose songs based on the lives of others. I put up a notice on my website and on some social networking pages inviting people to send me their stories. I had no idea what type of response I might get.

In just a short time, I had received more than 10,000 responses to my request. All these thousands of people were ready to share the stories of their lives. I spent two months hidden away in a Tennessee cabin, reading story after story and praying for the inspiration to give some of these stories a voice.

As I sat alone in the quiet of the cabin, I read stories of heartbreak and stories of healing. Stories of tragedy and struggle. Stories of praise and victory, and stories of just barely holding on. Stories of redemption and transformation. I spent a lot of time praying during those weeks, my eyes opened to the reality that we are surrounded by stories—all of them unfinished, all of them desperate to be told.

The album I wrote and recorded, The Story of Your Life, set a handful of these stories to music. I prayed
