Signs, wonders and miracles were the means of validating, authenticating and approving Jesus Christ and the early disciples when it was necessary. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    INTRODUCTION

Signs and wonders have generated heated arguments among believers for centuries. It is difficult for some believers in Christ to accept that they occur today. Nevertheless, all Christians agree that God performs miraculous acts. God cannot and will never stop doing mind- boggling things – that is His field of specialisation. God and miraculous deeds are inseparable.

Every Christian believes that God is a wonder- working God. They however, differ in certain aspects of their belief in signs and wonders. Some think signs and wonders still take place today, while others think they were only necessary to establish the First Century Church. The latter group insists that since the Church of Jesus Christ has been established, signs and wonders have ceased to be relevant. The problem with this reasoning is that the purpose of signs and wonders – to facilitate the propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ – has not changed.

Signs and wonders were necessary to generate faith in witnesses so they could believe the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Human beings have not changed since Bible times and for that matter, they still need signs and wonders in order to believe the Gospel. As a matter of fact, sceptics and atheists are on the increase and signs and wonders are needed to make them believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If people who had seen Jesus physically needed signs and wonders to believe the message of His first twelve disciples, unbelievers need them to believe the message of the Church today.

Jesus Christ underscored the need for signs and wonders when He healed the sick. He identified the miraculous healing of the sick as manifestations of signs and wonders, and used them to generate faith in those who doubted who He was.

46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.

47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. 48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

    John 4:46-48

Jesus Christ’s statement in the above scripture reference is emphatic – Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. In spite of this categorical statement, some are expecting people to believe the message of the Gospel without signs and wonders. Jesus Christ was consistent in His teachings that signs and wonders have the power to precipitate faith in those who witness them.

On one occasion, Jesus Christ intimated that signs and wonders of a certain sort could have changed the hearts of the people of Tyre and Sidon.

20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

    Matthew 11:20-24

Some well-meaning believers conjecture that signs and wonders were only practised by the early apostles of Jesus Christ and are not to be performed by members of the Body of Christ throughout the Church age. This position is questionable because the Scriptures show clearly that signs and wonders followed various categories of Jesus Christ’s disciples like the twelve apostles, the seventy disciples and those who believed in general.

1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.

2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. 9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.

18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

    Luke 10:1-2, 9, 17-19

The twelve apostles were first endowed with the grace to perform signs and wonders. Jesus Christ later on empowered another seventy disciples to do the same thing. He further directed His followers to ask the Father to send more labourers into the mission field. With this directive, He did not specify the number of labourers they should pray for. This number was unlimited – it was the number that was required to get the job done. Since the job of the twelve apostles and seventy disciples, involved preaching and demonstrating the signs and wonders of God, the unspecified number of disciples were expected to do the same.

Signs and wonders are the challenge of the modern-day Church. The Church must believe God to perform signs and wonders as a means of propagating the Gospel of Jesus Christ. SECULARISM is seizing people’s souls in our time. Human beings are becoming more and more unbelieving and evil in our time. It takes the agency of signs and wonders to make an unbelieving generation pay attention to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
