    I was expecting a paranoid rant against the dangers of chemicals in modern manufacturing, and a return to 'all-natural things'.

    Instead, I was very pleasantly surprised. This was a well-reasoned and well thought-out warning against some of the dangers and hazards of the materials involved in modern manufacturing. Although the author has only some formal training, they are aware of this and use what knowledge they have quite well. Even 'all natural' things, of course, deserve some due suspicion.

PREFACE

I’m a chemist, but I don’t make my living mixing chemicals for a multinational company. Most of my colleagues in lab coats don’t think much about the effects that their products will have on the rest of the world. Very few end up devoting their lives to education and prevention as I have, trying to get chemicals off the shelves and out of our homes, instead of onto and into them. How on earth did I end up on this side of the fence?

For one thing, I didn’t start out in chemistry; I started out in vaudeville. Work began for me at age one when I was a prop in my father’s magic act. I was a substitute for the traditional rabbit in an illusion specially conceived and created by my father. By age three, I was a professional entertainment worker and, like my father and mother, a member of the American Guild of Variety Artists. My sister, Ellie, a year and a half younger than I was, also worked professionally. Audiences couldn’t tell Ellie and me apart unless we were standing together, so my father could create some rather baffling illusions using us as assistants. Soon we were also performing a rather cute acrobatic act together, and I was lip-syncing funny recordings and singing.

For those who don’t know much about vaudeville, it was the primary form of entertainment until moving pictures progressively displaced it in the 1930s. Yet as vaudeville slowly died, the vaudevillians continued to live—and most continued to perform. They simply stopped playing the fancy Orpheum circuit theaters and began to work at state and county fairs, circuses and carnivals, Elks and Moose Club events, bar mitzvahs, and church picnics. We played those kinds of venues and shared the bill with the most spectacular acts you’ve never heard of—acts that had been on the road for forty or fifty years, ranging from single performer acts to entire vaudeville families of acrobats, comics, jugglers, high-wire walkers, sharpshooters, musicians and singers, and more.

If being onstage teaches you anything, it’s self-discipline and the value of honing multiple talents. Instead of running away to join the circus, I ran away from the circus at seventeen to go to the University of Wisconsin. I worked my way through three degrees: a bachelor of science, a master of science degree, and a master of fine arts degree. This odd combination of degrees was not my idea. It reflected my attempts to find some avenue for a career when door after door slammed shut, only because I was a member of that half of the population that squats to pee.

First, I was a premed student. I had a backer who would have paid my way through medical school, so I filled out my med school application in 1956 with excitement. Before the applications were even acted on, there was a kind of orientation session. I remember that a woman administrator spoke, which made it worse. She said that the laws had changed and they were now forced to accept 10 percent women, and they didn’t really want so many women in the school. Then she gleefully informed us that half of us would be flunked out after the first year anyway.

This was my first head-on encounter with discrimination. I had not seen this in show business. In entertainment, there will be equality as long as most men can’t sing soprano or wear a brief costume effectively enough to misdirect attention away from a magician’s gimmick. So I was unprepared for the med school speech. After working hard to make all A’s in the required courses, I had expected to be welcomed. I stood up in the orientation, made a very expressive hand gesture, and left.

Finishing pre-med left me about a year away from graduating with a major in chemistry, math, physics, or zoology. I chose to major in chemistry and minor in math. My plan was to become a chemist, and I was already working in the chemistry department as student slave labor. Just a few credits short of my degree, I ran out of money and went to work at Bjorksten Research Laboratories as a full-fledged research chemist. This firm was impressed with my work after a year and offered to pay for my education through graduate school. That offer evaporated, however, when the lab received a big government contract and found that it could not get security clearance for me. Apparently, being one of the few white members of the NAACP and participating in a few political events was enough to wreck your career in those days.

With another career down the pipe, I decided to switch majors completely. I had taken a large number of electives in art and found these courses very interesting. I finished my degree in chemistry and then applied for graduate school in studio art. My many art credits qualified me, but I was denied entry anyway. I was told that women couldn’t be artists. Women had to enroll in art education to be art teachers instead.

My fury was barely controllable. I remember checking out a library copy of one of the primary textbooks for art education and reading it. With the tome under my arm, I walked into the dean of the art department’s office, opened the book to page 1, and read the first convoluted, uninformative, verbose, useless sentence. I looked the dean in the face for a long, dramatic moment, then told him he had to be kidding. He enrolled me in studio art.

Now you at least know this about me: when I’m right, and someone else is wrong, I’m not afraid to let that person know about it.

When I graduated in 1964, I had a BS in chemistry with a minor in math, an MS in ceramics and sculpture, and an MFA in ceramics and glass with a minor in music. By this time I’d had three solo shows, I was an expert in glaze and glass chemistry because of my background, and I had won many awards for my ceramics and glass, including the Young Americans ceramics competition in 1962 and a purchase prize in the Twenty-Third Ceramics National competition in 1964. (A purchase prize means that when an artwork wins this award, it is purchased from the artist by some sort of organization, in this case a museum.) This prize piece is still in the permanent collection on exhibit at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York. In addition, I had paid for my graduate education by working in minor faculty positions as a research project assistant in both the physical chemistry and the civil engineering departments. I had also been a graduate teaching assistant in the chemistry department, and I was one of only two graduate students chosen to teach undergraduate ceramics for two years in the art department. With this strong background in teaching, it seemed logical to me that I could teach glass and ceramics in a college somewhere. In order to obtain notices of college job openings, I went to the university placement bureau and filled out my application. The only thing I needed for the university to file the form and start to send me leads for jobs was the signature of Harvey Littleton, my major professor. Littleton refused to sign it, saying, Women don’t get those jobs.¹

Instead, Littleton helped place all of the men in my class by introducing them to the right people, letting them know where there were job opportunities, and the like. All of them were teaching the year after graduation. And if you are in the art or crafts field, you probably recognize a few of my old classmates’ names: Marvin Lipofsky, Clayton Bailey, and, a few years after me, Dale Chihuly. None of these and other male graduates had any significant competition from women for the first decade or so that they were establishing themselves. In fact, in the field of glassblowing, men still hold most of the cards.

If I wanted to continue working as an artist, I had to find the money to buy my own studio. Glassblowing, which I dearly loved, was simply too expensive to set up, and I had to give it up. I bought a small farmhouse near Madison, made pottery, and got a few local teaching jobs that paid very poorly. I barely survived.²

What does this have to do with product safety? Okay, I knew we’d have to get back to the real subject as soon as I finished settling some old scores. All of this background is important, though, because something special happened to me when I was working as a research chemist to put myself through art school.

One day as I traveled back and forth between the art and chemistry departments, I realized that the same chemicals were being used in both places—acids for etching, solvents for oil painting, minerals in ceramics, and the like. The chemistry department provided all students with safety training, eye wash stations, and special ventilation hoods. Yet there were essentially no safety precautions being taken in the art department for the same chemicals.

Worse, the art professors had a screwy notion in the 1960s: artists must not be neat or clean, and they should have intimate physical contact with their art materials. As a result, everyone was covered from head to foot with their paints, clays, and inks. Well, not everyone. I was minoring in music while in art school and had a heavy performance schedule as a singer. I showed up in class—even pottery and glassblowing—with my hair done and long fingernails and managed to leave looking pretty much as when I had arrived. I got a very large body of artwork done and received all A’s, so don’t tell me it can’t be done.

My messy cohorts, however, covered in clay and paints, seemed to think that lead and cadmium compounds, which even then were known to be highly toxic, were somehow perfectly safe if they were in paints or ceramic glazes as pigments. It just didn’t seem reasonable to me that changing your major from chemistry to art made you immune to toxic substances.

The fruits of this lack of safety awareness in the art department were also made manifest in many accidents and illnesses. Three of these are worth noting here.

1. The hot plate where we melted wax in the glaze room (which would have been done in a hood in the chemistry department) developed an ominous fog a few feet above the pot that suddenly exploded into a fireball. This is a well-known phenomenon to chemists—but not to the teachers and the students in the art department.

2. Some of us got acute lead poisoning when we were taught to make dripped lead sculpture. We melted lead indoors without ventilation, cast it into bars, and used an acetylene torch to remelt and drip the lead into our molds. We thought we had some kind of flu that caused the vomiting and the diarrhea. No one in the art department, including me at that time, knew that an invisible fume of tiny lead oxide particles is emitted into the air whenever lead melts. And because the first effect of lead exposure is to lower the IQ, it may explain why I still remained in art school after this.

3. One of my classmates, Clayton Bailey, decided to build a salt kiln. This is a kiln into which salt is thrown when the kiln is at high temperatures. The salt dissociates into highly corrosive and reactive substances that attack clay, turning the ceramic surface into a glassy glaze. But Clayton decided it would be cool to build the kiln indoors in the kiln room. The choking fumes emitted by this salt kiln resulted in the emergency evacuation of the entire art building.

These incidents made me aware that there was a need for someone in the arts who was knowledgeable about safety and perhaps had a little common sense.

Because we were required to present graduate seminar papers on art-related subjects, I gave mine on the safety aspects of ceramics. It was at these seminars that I first experienced the incredible hostility generated by some people at the mere suggestion that they might want to rethink their work habits. During the critique of my seminars, some of my classmates informed me that this subject had no place in the arts and knowledge about the toxicity of their materials would interfere with their creativity. I didn’t think that death and disease would do much for their creativity either, so I persisted.

My interest in safety became known, and soon I was consulting on art safety, in addition to teaching at the Madison Art Center and the Madison Area Technical College. I certainly was no expert, but I had absolutely no competition because no one else seemed at all interested in the subject.

Then after I had worked several years at the Madison Area Technical College as one of only two ceramics teachers, the director decided to increase the department to three people and appoint a ceramic department head. I applied for the job. Instead, they hired a young man fresh out of school who had only a BS degree. They paid him twice what I was getting. I knew then that if I stayed in Madison, I’d probably kill someone.

I came to New York City in 1969, and from then on, I had no major discrimination problems. I must admit, however, that I fell back on my entertainment background, and my first paid jobs were singing and acting. In a kind of reverse logic in my life, whenever I was broke, I went back into show business.

In New York in the 1970s, the schools at which I taught were again calling on me to solve safety problems. But unlike the situation in Madison, I found that there were other people who were interested in art safety. Two of these people were Michael McCann, a Ph.D. biochemist, and Cate Jenkins, a Ph.D. chemist and National Science Foundation resident. In 1977, the three of us founded the Center for Occupational Hazards, later known as the Center for Safety in the Arts. Our aim was to provide the arts with health information and industrial hygiene services.

Industrial hygiene: that job title sounds like we clean teeth in a factory. But it means that we analyze workplace hazards, assess the risks, and provide strategies for mitigating and limiting the risks, which includes providing special ventilation or protective equipment such as gloves, clothing, and respirators.

Applying industrial hygiene to the art and theater professions was a new idea in 1977. Although there are regulations and limits on your exposure to toxic chemicals if you work in a factory, a coal mine, or a laboratory, these regulations often are not applied to the arts. Yet the same toxic substances are used by artists, and their exposures to them are often more intimate and for longer periods of time than the traditional eight-hour workday.

There are also occupational regulations that protect workers from having accidents. For example, big healthy construction workers cannot go near a location where they could fall more than six feet unless they are wearing a harness tied to a five-thousand-pound anchorage or there is a rail built around the fall hazard. Yet performers are treated very differently. Performers, who may even be children or the elderly, are expected to work onstage one step from a ten-foot fall into the orchestra pit while powerful lights shine in their faces and toxic stage smoke is blown at them; then the stage suddenly goes black and they are directed to exit quickly in the dark. Something clearly is very wrong here.

Late in 1986, I left the center and started up another nonprofit called Arts, Crafts, and Theater Safety (ACTS) to do the same kind of work. Then in 1995, I took on a second job as safety officer for the United Scenic Artists, Local USA829 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). As safety officer, I can recommend closing theaters or film locations for safety violations. Actually, I provided the expert advice that resulted in the union’s stopping work on eight major film locations, which means that really important people hate me.

The research and the writing for my theater and art books required me to become intimately familiar with vast numbers of chemicals: pigments, dyes, solvents, wood, metal, minerals, plastics, acids, alkalis, pesticides (as preservatives, especially in art conservation), and much more. In a sense, there is no chemical, either natural or synthetic, that is not being used by some artist or in some theater scene or prop shop somewhere. I’m even an expert on the chemicals that are used in stage pyrotechnics, because my familiarity with them goes back to childhood and is enhanced by my knowledge as a chemist.

I vote on national standards (American Society for Testing and Materials) for product safety in the areas of art materials and consumer products. I even vote on two standards for the National Fire Protection Association on fire and pyrotechnic effects. I have qualified as an expert witness in many lawsuits that involve exposure to toxic chemicals that are used in the arts or in safety hazards associated with theater or art.

I have always considered the chemicals in the products that are needed to clean up that studio or shop or launder those costumes. And it was always evident to me that the same hazards, labeling, and regulatory issues should apply to these products. In fact, the hazards of these products are even more critical because of their widespread use and the fact that they are used in homes where mothers and infants may be exposed to them twenty-four hours a day.

I’m excited about explaining these issues to you in a way that will enable you to understand how to determine whose opinions you should trust and how to evaluate these products on your own.

Chapter 1

Your Body Is a Chemistry Experiment

Have We Given Ourselves Diabetes, Autism, and Cancer?

In 1895, the German physics professor Wilhelm Röntgen accidentally discovered that his cathode ray tube emitted previously unknown rays that could penetrate solid matter. He called them X-rays and electrified the world with an X-ray picture of his wife’s hand. In 1901, Röntgen won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention, and the rush to make medical devices that used the new technology was in full swing.

The public did not dwell on the fact that a number of those early researchers died of cancer or X-ray burns. In 1918, for example, the New York Times reported that Dr. Eugene Wilson Caldwell, one of the inventors of the fluoroscope, died as the result of burns he suffered many years ago while making experiments with the X-ray. Röntgen himself died of intestinal cancer in 1923.

Many uses and abuses of this technology occurred, under the direction of qualified medical doctors, as well as quack practitioners. One device that many older Americans have probably had experience with was invented and marketed by the Adrian Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Adrian’s engineers had the bright idea of making a fluoroscope that would X-ray a child’s feet to ensure that his or her new shoes fit. In the late 1940s and during the1950s, about ten thousand of these machines were in shoe stores throughout the United States. I remember many times watching my own bones through the fluoroscope’s viewing port as I wiggled my toes in new shoes, while my sister and my mother looked through the other two ports.

Despite the fact that by 1940 it was well known that X-rays were not innocuous and the Adrian Company knew that these machines also leaked significant amounts of radiation into the surrounding area, Adrian still sold and maintained fluoroscopes for about thirty years. Early on, legislatures started to pass bans on the machines. By 1970, thirty-three states had banned these units, and restrictions on their use in other states were so tight that fluoroscopes were rarely used. In 1981, however, one was found still in regular use in a store in Madison, West Virginia. When the store manager was told that the machine was illegal in that state, the store donated it to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its exhibits. All of the people who used fluoroscopes increased their exposure to radiation and upped their risk of developing cancer. How many people actually developed cancer as a result of watching their toes inside one of these machines? There is no way to know. This means that companies suffer little or no repercussions if they promote a product that causes cancer, because the disease doesn’t develop until years after exposure to a toxic agent, making it difficult for consumers to determine the exact cause. Gruesome as it seems, it pays for manufacturers to make products that cause cancer.

The public’s use of radium is an even better example of how companies can profit by harming both consumers and their own workers.

Marie and Pierre Curie discovered radium in 1898, and within a decade, others knew how to isolate the substance from various ores. Soon afterward, entrepreneurs, following the pattern of many a new discovery, incorporated radium into miracle patent potions to cure a variety of ills. When a discovery makes the news and the public has already heard about the new miracle, this helps the quacks sell their products. It is unknown how many gullible people died from ingesting radium, but the risk was substantial and it certainly caused cancers.

In 1917, the U.S. Radium Corporation mixed radium with a little glue and water to make a paint that glowed in the dark. The company dubbed it Undark and decided to use it to make watch and instrument dials that were readable at night. U.S. Radium became a major supplier of radioluminescent watches to the military. Soon, ordinary citizens were clamoring for the glow-in-the-dark products.

At U.S. Radium, about a hundred workers, mainly women, were hired to paint the watch faces and the instrument dials. The workers were told that the paint was harmless. They used camel hair brushes to apply the paint to the dial numbers. The brushes would lose shape after a few strokes, so the supervisors encouraged their workers to point the brushes with their lips or tongues to keep them sharp. (My classmates and I were taught this same brush-pointing technique at the University of Wisconsin in 1958.)

By the mid-1920s, something was clearly wrong with the dial painters. The women were suffering from anemia, bone fractures, and necrosis of the jaw, a condition now known as radium jaw. What followed was the same sickening scenario that repeatedly plays out in almost every worker’s health dispute. Read the following chain of events and see whether a similar pattern might apply to other toxic products that were reported in the news during your lifetime:

1. Workers were told that the paint was nontoxic, although there was no factual basis for this declaration. The employers discounted evidence that cancers were claiming the lives of many radium scientists. The workers believed their superiors.

2. Health complaints were made in ever-increasing frequency. It became obvious that something was seriously wrong.

3. U.S. Radium and other watch-dial companies began a campaign of disinformation and bogus medical tests—some of which involved X-rays and may even have made the condition worse.

4. Doctors, dentists, and researchers complied with U.S. Radium’s and other companies’ requests and refused to release their data to the public.

5. Medical professionals also aided the companies by attributing worker deaths to other causes. Syphilis was often cited as the diagnosis, which had the added benefit to management of being a smear on the victims’ reputations.

6. One worker, Grace Fryer, decided to sue U.S. Radium. It took Fryer two years to find a lawyer who was willing to take on U.S. Radium. Only four other workers joined her suit; they became known as the Radium Girls.

7. In 1928, the case was settled in the middle of the trial before it went to the jury for deliberation. The settlement for each of the five Radium Girls was $10,000 (the equivalent of $124,000 in 2009 dollars), plus $600 a year while the victim lived and all medical expenses.

Remember the general outline of this scenario because you will see it over and over again: The company denies everything while the doctors and the researchers (and even the industrial hygienists) in the company’s employ support the company’s distorted version of the facts. Perhaps one worker in a hundred will finally pursue justice, one lawyer out of the hundreds of thousands in the United States will finally step up to the plate, and the case will be settled for chump change.

Killing workers through chemical exposure is even more profitable now that workers’ compensation laws cover occupational illnesses, as well as the traumas they initially covered. Among the first states to pass workers’ compensation laws in 1911 was New Jersey, where the Radium Girls worked.
