    A Dog's Wisdom - Margaret H. Bonham

    Preface

It was a cold evening in the Colorado mountains. A million stars shone above me and my sled team as we launched into the darkness along the Forest Service road. The trees loomed like ominous shadows around me and I couldn’t see anything beyond my sled dogs.

I was alone, and yet there they were. Ed and Kersel in the lead. Tasha and Skye right behind them. Lightning, Jasmine, Framm, Rowdy, Junior, and Sweetie following. They were all there screaming to go, chomping lines and banging their harnesses in an effort to get me to give the command to go forward. I was alone and yet not alone. I was with the dogs.

That night I first discovered the primal link between dogs and humans. I had owned and trained dogs for many years, but had never experienced the heady rush of being part of the pack. That night was my initiation into their world. Standing on the sled, I realized what it was that made the dog.

At that moment, and in a thousand other moments since, I discovered the truth about dogs. Their wisdom and courage transcend anything we can lay claim to. They understand and know some very fundamental truths that we humans have long forgotten or have chosen to ignore. And yet, the dog’s candor touches our hearts each time. Every day, dogs show us how we should live our lives. They speak to us through their hearts and loyalty and touch us in ways we never thought possible.

Some time ago—experts argue exactly when and how—dogs threw in their lot with humans. Something special within those first dogs caused us to take them into our caves or huts, feed them and keep them with our families, and eventually train them for hunting, guarding, pulling, and herding. How else could they have slipped their way into our homes and our hearts?

The modern dog is different from his ancestors, but he has the same instincts. He tells us through his actions how he looks at the world and how he thinks the world should be. This book is a collection of that canine wisdom I’ve seen in my own dogs, my neighbors’ dogs, my friends’ dogs, and, yes, even in strangers’ dogs.

When you read this book, you’ll step inside the world of the dog. I guarantee you’ll find something to make you smile, laugh, or even become a bit teary-eyed. After all, these are dogs. Those of us who love them know they have a wisdom all their own, and they share it with us every day. Maybe you’ll even see a bit of the wisdom your own dog has whispered to
