My Daddy Is A Hero 5 (LCDR Chase Latos) - Dahlia Rose

    Chapter One

The blades of the Pave Hawk chopper could be heard even with the helmet and the communications headpiece over his ears. On either side the gunners fired suppression rounds, hoping to drive back the enemy from where they were supposed to land. It was very rare for them to try to put the chopper in the middle of ground fighting, but with two soldiers seriously injured they had to do it.

He was the second pilot today. Lieutenant Commander Chase Latos usually worked in the Forward Operating Base, or FOB, coordinating the flights and getting the injured air lifted out to Germany. But one of the pilots was down with a bad case of stomach flu, and they were short handed. He’d always kept his certification up and had no problem jumping into the helicopter and being the wingman.

The wind swirled the dust around on the only flat surface they could find in that area. Afghanistan wasn’t known for its scenery—rocks jutted out of the ground like angry teeth in the unforgiving terrain. He always marveled at the villages there and the way people adapted to the country. They grew food, grass, raised children and gleaned a life out of this country. It was not only harsh but filled with insurgents who could take over a village and use it as a jump off point to attack United States forces. Even as the men put the chopper on the ground, bullets zinged by. They had to be quick, because they were a big flying target for any ground to air missiles.

Move! he yelled into his headpiece.

The two medics were out of the chopper doors before the word was completely out of his mouth. The gunners were driving back the few insurgents with sheer will, and a shit load of fifty caliber bullets spit out of the guns mounted on the doors of the chopper. It always reminded him of the cartoon where some character spit out watermelon seeds like a machine gun. But these weren’t seeds, they were big ol’ rounds of pure damage and could blow a leg off when it hit the human body. He’d seen the holes they made, and they weren’t pretty. The medics came back with one soldier on a gurney and got in behind him, while two other soldiers carried their brother in arms, lifting him by the straps of his pack or whatever part of their uniform they could grab on to. They ran with grit and pure intent through a hail of bullets to get him in the medical chopper. A bullet caught one of his medics in the shoulder, and he fell forward with a grunt.

Fuck! Chase spit out the word viciously. Drag him in!

The medic that was already inside used the shoulder strap of his partner’s vest and pulled him into the chopper. With three bodies needing medical care and only one medic, Chase knew he had to get back there and help.

Get this bird off the ground! he yelled to the pilot and dragged off his headset.

He climbed from the cockpit into the body of the chopper as it took off into the sky. Two soldiers lay unconscious, and his medic was holding his shoulder as blood leaked between his fingers.

Get some fluids into them, run IVs now, Chase barked as he moved toward the medic. How many times were you hit?

One. I think it’s a through and through in my shoulder, the medic said ground out.

Chase pulled him forward and heard his grunt of pain as he looked at the medic’s back. It would be great if the bullet had come out and was not inside his body. But then the path it took on its way out would be worrisome. Luckily, it was a direct path, and Chase packed the wound on either side with gauze and wrapped it tightly. Still, he could see blood bloom through the white material. He probably nicked something in there, Chase thought and knew they needed to get back to the FOB fast.

As they moved further away from the fighting the gunners were able to give their guns a rest and give him a hand. They got intravenous fluids into the wounded, including the medic, while they literally hauled ass through the Afghanistan sky. Another noise filtered through the sound of the blades. A baby crying? Chase frowned and everything around him faded. He opened his eyes, and instead of the chopper, he was in his semi-dark bedroom. Chase sighed and looked at the clock. It said three-thirty a.m.

Right on time, he murmured and threw the blanket off before swinging his feet from his bed. It was either the baby crying or his dreams that woke him around this time every night.

Chase moved toward the door and stepped into the hallway of his house in Florida and went into the bedroom where the crying was coming from. He turned on the light, and his daughter Ava was standing in her crib. Her curly brown hair was tousled from sleep and tears streaked her face. Her chubby legs stepped like she was marching on her pink My Little Pony sheets, and when she saw Chase she held out her hands.

Dadadadadadadada, she said in her baby jabber.

Chase grinned, Ava was just learning to sound words and instead of just dada it went on forever.

Hey, sweet girl, why the tears? he crooned and plucked her from the crib into his arms. I swear you know I’m dreaming and do this to wake me up.

Her cries stopped instantly, and she smiled up at him showing ten teeth, six at the bottom and four on top. Ava laid her head on his chest as he walked downstairs to the kitchen. His heart swelled with love for the tiny being. He knew one day he’d have to explain a lot of things to her, such as where her mom was and why it was just them when it came to family.

But by then he’d have showered her with so much love that the knowledge wouldn’t hurt her but help her understand. He warmed her milk, because she didn’t like it cold, went to the recliner, and turned on the TV to her favorite channel. My Little Pony came on and she smiled around her
