About this ebook

Just like adults, kids need easy ways to recall stuff-especially now, when they don't even have to remember a phone number because their cell phones remember it for them. And just like the bestselling i before e (except after c) for adults, this book is jammed with easy-to-use tricks for remembering lots of stuff-especially stuff they need to know for school. Through entertaining (and often silly) examples, kids will learn to remember everything they need to know about:
  • The Earth-including fun facts about geography, geology, and the weather- and the sky -revolving around planets, stars, atmosphere, and so on
  • Reading and writing-covering everything from the smallest punctuation mark to the prickliest words to spell to the trickiest grammar to the grandest figure of speech
  • The mysteries of history-from Way Before You Were Born (ancient history) to the most recent American history facts every kid needs to memorize
  • Math and music-a surprising, but logical combination that examines cool ways to remember numbers, times tables, calculations, and musical notations

Kids will like learning fun ways to remember stuff and will love getting the good grades that follow.

When I picked up this book, I thought it was a grammar book but it’s a book on mnemonics. The book is broken into subjects from Science to Language Arts to History and offers easy ways to remember facts. The book is written for school aged children but would prove useful for any age group. Some of the mnemonics are ones I remember and others are not. The author offers opportunities to create your own based on the information you need to remember. For those who might pass over a book like this, I would like to share that there are still mnemonics that I use to this day. Some I can’t help but to remember as I access that particular fact. For example, I find myself singing H-A-double L- O W- double E – N spells Halloween every October without fail even though I haven’t actually heard the song since second grade.Who can forget ROY G BIV or Mary Visits Every Monday and Just Stays Until Noon Period (that’s not in the book but there are similar ones for remembering the order of the planets). Mnemonics are a great teaching tool and this is a wonderful resource for those who want to find an easy way to remember facts. The book even offers mnemonics for remembering how to spell tricky words. I know there are a few I struggle with that will become easier due to this book.Subjects in this book: Calendar, Astronomy, Geography, Language Arts, History, Math and Music.

Think about all the stuff you have to remember every day. You have to remember to feed your pets, take your lunch to school, write down homework assignments, bring textbooks home for studying, practice your instrument, and more and more and more. But this list of things to remember doesn’t even begin to include all the information you have to remember for tests and quizzes and papers. What to do?

Start with this book! It’s filled with tricks that help you remember all the stuff you need to know. These tricks—called mnemonics (ditch the m when you pronounce the word)—are like sticky notes for your brain. You can use them to remember how many days are in the month of March, the names of the planets, the difference between longitude and latitude, the correct spelling of attendance (or is it spelled attendence?), the seven wonders of the ancient world, the three types of angles in geometry, the different sections found in an orchestra, and so much more.

Best of all, these tricks are fun! On the following page you’ll find three main kinds of memory tricks.

Acronyms These are words formed from the first letter (or letters) of a series of words, like USA (United States of America), radar (Radio Detection And Ranging), and NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Acronyms help you remember short phrases easily.

Acrostics The first letter of each word in an acrostic sentence is the first letter of what you need to remember. Acrostics are really helpful when you need to remember a list of items. For example, if you need to remember the names of the countries in Central America, you just need to learn this acrostic sentence: My Big Gerbil Eats His New Carrots Politely. That’s a lot easier to remember than Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama!

Rhymes Whether they’re simple poems or songs with many verses, rhymes get stuck in your head—and make information easy to remember. The title of this book comes from one of the most popular mnemonic rhymes:

i before e, except after c

Or when sounding like a

As in neighbor and weigh.

You’ll also discover occasional puns and other words used playfully to help you store information in your brain. For example, you’ll know how to change your clock for daylight savings time if you remember spring forward, fall back. Pictures scattered throughout these pages will help you remember bits of information too.

Finally, you’ll see two kinds of boxes: Extra Credit boxes ask you to make up your own mnemonic devices or answer quirky questions based on the mnemonics you’ve just learned, and the boxes called Too Cool for School give
