About this ebook

A fairy, a dream, and a bean burrito!

Annabelle, like all of her fairy friends, desperately wants to be a rose fairy when she grows up. But when things go horribly wrong at the Great Selecting ceremony, the fairy queen tells Annabelle she will have to spend the rest of her life as a fart fairy!

As Annabelle's childhood friends distance themselves from her, Annabelle's family -- especially her goofy brother, Fevrile -- tell her everything will be alright. But, she knows better than to believe them.

This is the story of how Annabelle tries to run away from her life as a fart fairy, breaking rules and friendships along the way. But, when catastrophe strikes, she is forced to embrace her identity as a Forgotten Fairy, leading her to a destiny more important than anything else in history.

Annabelle, the Reluctant Fart Fairy is book one in the Forgotten Fairies series, designed for readers ages 5 to 105.

INTERVIEW WITH M.T. LOTT

How did you create the character of Annabelle the Fart Fairy?

I'm a dad, and my two kids -- one boy, one girl -- love silly and slightly gross stories. Think Captain Underpants type books. My daughter loved fairy books and movies when she was little. She would constantly ask me to tell her fairy stories before bed. When I ran out of cute fairy stories, I created the Annabelle character. I probably told her fifty stories before I thought, "Hey, this might make a good character for a book."

Did your daughter help you write the book?

She was my beta reader, for sure. I also got a few ideas from her. Once I was stuck in part of the book and I asked her what she thought should happen. She had a great idea, and I put it in the book.

When did you start writing books?

I've written since I was in junior high school, but I never published anything. I was an off-and-on writer. Once my kids started reading, I thought about writing books for children, but I never had a good idea until Annabelle.

What do you like to do for fun?

Surfing, gardening, and hiking.

What's next for Annabelle?

I might start working on books about some of the other Forgotten Fairies. I think maybe Fevrile deserves a chance to tell his story.

    For my daughter.

    Chapter One: Meet Annabelle

HI. MY NAME IS ANNABELLE, and I am a fairy. What kind of fairy? Well, I’ll get to that. I had to write this book because the only fairies most humans know about are the fairies they want to know about. The flower fairies, the cute furry animal fairies, the sweet birdie fairies, junk like that.

But there are tons of fairies out there no one has ever heard of. Some of us fairies call them the Forgotten Fairies, and I’m one of them.

Most humans just want to think about pretty cute things. They never think about all the other things that go into keeping the world working. Stuff like spiders, scabs, gophers, barf, snakes and farts. But, if you think about it, you realize it’s all connected.

But, whatever, I’ll get to that later.

The only way you will understand is if I tell you about how fairies get their jobs. You probably thought we were born into them, but it’s not true. We are all born the same. Then, we go to school for a few hundred years to learn everything about nature. And, when we are 500 years old, we go to the Great Selecting where we learn what type of fairy we will be.

You probably also didn’t know that most fairies live to be between 2,500 and 3,000 years old. When we hit 500, it’s about the same as turning 18 for a human. It is the time when all the older fairies say we have to get to work and do real fairy stuff. And that is why we do the Great Selecting.

The Great Selecting is pretty awesome. All the fairies born 500 years ago gather in the Glade of Life. Each individual Fairy County has its own Selecting Ceremony. Fairy Counties are pretty big, in human terms about twenty miles by twenty miles. Each county has a queen fairy who does the selecting.

During the day, there is a huge party and everyone eats and drinks tasty stuff like honeysuckle nectar and acorn cupcakes. The old fairies tell tales about when they were selected, and the 500-year-old fairies wonder what they will be.

It was the same for me. I wondered and worried what I would spend the rest of my life doing. What would the queen decide was the right job for me?

The time for the Great Selecting had arrived, and I would soon find out what I would be. That is where my story truly begins.

    Chapter Two: Waiting and Wishing

IT WAS THE NIGHT OF the Great Selecting, and I was sitting in the Glade of Life talking with my friends.

Annabelle, if you could be any fairy, what would you be? asked Sadie, wiping the crumbs of an acorn cupcake from her lips.

A rose fairy, obviously, I said.

Sadie and my other friends nodded. Every girl fairy wanted to be a rose fairy. Looking back on it, I had no idea why we all wanted to be rose fairies. I guess we thought that flower fairies are the best and that roses are the most beautiful flowers. But it seems so long ago now. I have learned so much.

Well, there’s no way we could all be rose fairies. What is your second choice? said Jane.

I took a bite of my black bean burrito and a gulp of honeysuckle nectar and thought about it. I guess some other sort of flower fairy. Maybe a sunflower or daffodil fairy? It might even be cool to be a butterfly fairy.

Jane scrunched up her pointy face.

What? You don’t like butterfly fairies? I asked, taking another chomp from my burrito.

JANE SHOOK HER HEAD. It’s not that. It’s just . . . How can you eat those burritos?

I dunno, I said with my mouth full. They’re just my favorite.

I’d be okay with being a hummingbird fairy, said Cynthia. My friends all nodded their agreement. Cynthia didn’t talk much.
